Went in the triumph dealership for oil. checked for stock tires was told they had them instock I wanted to prepay for the front tire now and bring the wheels in one at a time for mounting at a later date. I paid 117 for the tire after paying I asked "That is a metzler right?" Was told no, thats a Dunlop. I said I WANT Matching Tires and I prefer Metzler". Dealer said the rear Metz. in stock and they would order a front metzler and I could pay the price differance when its mounted. Days later they called tire is in. After the call i figured out i didnt have the tools to get the front wheel off. so the next day i dropped them the rear wheel on lunch break. after work i payed at the front of store and walking back to pick it up i said to the guy (same guy that ordered the metzler days earlier)"You put a Metzler on right?" I was told No ITS A Dunlop!!! And we have your front metzler here (pre-paid 117 on 150) whenever your ready. I was so shocked and it showed he says Itll be ok I talked to the service guys and you can mix those brands and the only differance is the words on the sidewall cause we matched the tread.
ANY ADVICE ON THIS B.S. My options. 1)Should I take the rear wheel back and tell them Metzler or 2)Tell them to put matching Dunlop on the front 3) Roll with the rear dunlop/ front metzler
Same tires front and rear. Any bike shop worth its salt would have known you wanted matching tires.. Since thye have the Dumlop in stock take it as well as the metz. Save the metz for next time that way you only have ot buy 1 tire then. Unless thye are gonna eat the cost of the tire. Then just have them keep it and put a the Dunlop on the front
Dont like what you see??? Big red X in the top right of your screen will fix it!
I would make them put the Metz on since you had them order it for you and that is what you agreed on. Don't let them give you any BS about extra charges for mounting another tire since they screwed up not you. While you could run the 2 different tires with no problem it isn't what you asked for or agreed on.

Your post doesn't make it clear what you told them to do when you dropped off the rear tire. I know it seems obvious based on your earlier conversations, but did you specifically tell them to install a Metzler? Whichever way this goes, I wouldn't want to mix tires, just 'cuz it would bug me. Front and rear should be the same, either Dunlop or Metzler.

So what is the problem with mixing brand`s i have bridgestone on the rear and michelin on the frount and have had for most of the time i have owned it Dont see the prob
Its not a matter of whether it an issue to mix brands, its the principle in that he didnt get what he asked for, that is rotten service.

It is not a question of matching tires, it is all about the stealer not meeting customer requirements:

Look at the timestamps; that horse was still alive when I began beating it, I swear!
As to dissimilar tires, I know of no absolute prohibition but... Assuming that a motorcycle's front and rear ends are going the same direction on the same surface at the same time; I would very much prefer that the tires were designed to work together and were made with the same construction methods and of the same rubber compounds.
Different shoes for the left and right foot anyone?

your mistake was not inpecting the tire before they mounted it. yes, that means that they should have had it in stock ect. how could you discern how old it is? do you even know that now? never prepay for a tire. always inspect before mounting and ask to see the old inner tube. (that you marked the stem of) never trust a stealership
I've just done a customer service 'programme' at work.... I'm still gonna tell to bugger off, just not be as blunt.... kinda bugger off sir...
anyway, the gist of the course was that the customer has expectations, and to act to their expectations...
You expected Metzelers, and you don't have them. Kick some butt...
And boof, there may not be a problem mixing some makes with other makes, but sods law is that dunlop and metzeler are two that don't mix. Having said that I currently have a metz front and the stock bridgestone on the rear of the 06. the 03 has metz on both... I'm just waiting for the stock rear to be worn enough to be worth replacing. But will before my next long distance ride.

Moe is correct and I've had a similar experience with the dealership trying to slip something by me. I would insist on matching tires and want to inspect them. Matching the tires makes more sense cause they'll wear and ride the same. Dunlops are fine and usually have a good wear life. Metzlers and Avons are my preferred brands but I know many people that swear by Dunlop.
Didnt even think about the tube...thanks!!My mistake was not taking both wheels down there at the same time. I'm going back on Tue.(closed sun-mon)with both wheels and tell them again Metzler's both wheels. thanks guys

You need to cool your jets. I answered both questions. Maybe you are the one who should read.
This is also a very good point.

Well i will have to just accept your expert advice on mixing brand`s as i am new to this bike riding only been at it for 38 year`s you bloke`s know best after all you are AMERICAN i must have been just lucky not to have a problem in my time on bike`s
Advice on bad manners: If you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything.
As far as tires go, When I needed to replace the stock B'stones, I researched it here. The most important thing (I think) that I learned was how to read the serial # on the tire. It reveals the mfg date. You don't want to buy an old tire. I wouldn't have realised this.
Next came the search. Decided I wanted the Dunlop 404s. I could have gotten them cheaper off the net, But that way I couldn't check the date before I paid for them. So, I had the dealer order them, cause I needed him to mount them. I pulled the wheels and watched as the operation was performed. Just say, I'm glad I was there.
Got about 3k miles on them now, and they feel great! Now, I wait for Spring, Uncle Charlie

I learned a thing or 2 in my 30+ years riding and wrenching on bikes and the time I spent going to school to be a mechanic. So take it or leave it, if you don't want advice and just want to argue and throw insults do it elsewhere. I ask when I don't know and I answer when I do. That is how adults exchange ideas no matter what country we come from and we all take and give advise to each other here no matter what country we live in. Most of the time we manage to have some fun and toss in a little humor too.

I know, the way I read his post was we are know it alls as Americans and the fact that I have mixed brands with no problem means nothing. I also wanted to point out that my being American means little on this board since we have Greek, Swedish, English, Scottish, Aussie, etc... who all give good info and answer and ask questions too and generally we all get along just fine. Maybe I read his meaning wrong since we can't hear tone on here or see facial expressions or body language.I first responded to this.

I pointed out that I had addressed that in my first post, not that my word was golden or anything. He then posted this.

Front and rear tyre`s ware at different rate`s and different way`s so saying different brand`s are "different " does not make sense Until someone can give me a reason why not i think i will keep doing what i have been doing ,the reason i said you were a know it all you dont seem to leave any room for other people`s comment , it`s your way or the highway that`s the way i read it

Sorry to say, I have just re-read this post 4 times trying to get it straight in my head, and the gist of it is that he DID NOT get what he ordered, therefore it should be put right by the shop.
As to riding with different tyre brands, I personally have always riden with matching pairs. I have friends who haven't, without seemingly any ill effect. Some garages say no, never mix, some say yes!! So maybe at the end of the day it is all down to personal choice. Who knows, certainly not me, as I am no great expert, but it is MY choice to ride with matching pairs.
Also as a NON American, I have been unable to find where Dog33 originally upset you, you appear to have just jumped straight in! I am sorry if this upsets you, but I do feel you need to calm it down a little. This IS a multi-national site, and although we do make comments on each others nationality, this is ONLY done in jest.
At the end of the day, we are all here because we have a mutial interest! Although there are some like me, who have since changed bikes, but stay around for the GOOD company, this site can provide, if you give it chance. It has been my good fortune to meet some of the finest people I know, off of this site. Also from being told by others on this site, about the welcome they have recieved when visiting other countries, by the members on this site, maybe we are just all friends that haven't met yet! So please treat us as such!!
Right end of my rant
Dog33, you forgot to mention the Poles, please don't go upsetting them as well!!! After all we need someone take Best Bike at Dent again this year!!(otherwise Ray will win)
As to everyone else have a good one, the sun has just come out, the snow has melted, I have the day off work, so I am off to put some miles on my TRACTOR

Blimey Paul, do you feel better now you've got that off your chest?? Don't think I've ever seen you post such a long post!!!
I, too, have met some great guys off this place. One, even though I'd never met them before, offered to put me up for a couple of nights. I was literally 1000's of miles from home, on the other side of the world... I was on a Speedmaster on the east coast of Australia at the time. That's the friendship this place breeds. Normally. Just chill and accept that different people have different points of view.

bad service has a way of getting everything stirred up. we all have been 'had' and seeing it happen again brings back those funky feelings. hope you get it sorted out soon so you can rideandrideandride.

You don't make any sense, I didn't say that, I said you can run different brands together and that I have done so with no problem. I never said this would be the case with everyone, I also never stated anything about wear rates. Even different models of the same brand will wear differently according to the compound. I have heard instances where a very dissimilar tread pattern isn't a good idea but I have never mixed anything different enough to feel at all while riding.
I don't remember saying different brands are different even though they are. That doesn't mean you can't run them together.

I think we are just going around in circles now and just agree to disagree ,what one person read`s is not all way`s what the next person read`s in these type of conversation`s i will have to agree that this is probably the best and most informative site for us lucky enough to own a TRIUMPH AMERICA/SPEEDMASTER and will there for as of now pull my head in on this subject
Dumb ol me. I've been riding for as long as my like minded friend, Dogg, and I have never even thought of what difference non-matching tires would have. But then again, my riding style is so laid back, I probably never tax what the bike will do! (With the exception of when I rode with my friends at the ARK ralley, wherin I had to repaint most of the underside leading edges of my bike when I got home.) (And, not to relate the repaint of the front edges of the tank, for all the paint that blew off riding with a certain St. Louis friend)(AND, and, you know why he's a chrome-aholic? Because he can't keep paint on either!) (But I'm glad we did settle one question, Americans DO know it all! (Too bad we don't always act on our knowledge, or in the case of the last admin., we do)(Heh, heh, thought I'd slip that in there while I'm hijacking)

+1! Whenever i had tires put on my America wheels, i ALWAYS asked for, AND PAID FOR, new tubes and rim strips, even when it was less than 45 days between changes. (Because i tend to ride hard and fast!)I later bought some Speedy alloys and now mount my own tires. When i pulled the tires off the America wheels, it was obvious that the rim strips had never been replaced. Who knows about the tubes. It's sad that you can't trust people to give you what you pay for...
Howbeit when He, the Spirit of truth, is come; He will guide you in all truth:
This is why I pulled my wheels and brought them to the dealer so I could watch them get changed and balanced. It was an adventure, to say the least. Ever hear an inner tube explode? I have. It's loud! Uncle Charlie
