I've been working at the idea of building a land speed Trumpet for a few years now. The movie 'The World's Fastest Indian' sure didn't help things any! So, the other day I found an '04 Speedmaster complete chassis for only $310 to my door! My thought was to start with a 790cc setup and de-bore it with sleeves and pistons, or de-stroke the stock crank.

The record at Bonneville for A/G 750 (Special Construction/Modified Gas Engine 750cc) is 171.550 mph. I'm not looking to set the world on fire and blow the record away at first, I just want to ride! The end goal is go up to the 1000cc and/or the 1350cc class.

Any ideas, comment, suggestions? This is the platform that I want to use. Starting with a gas 750 and going to maybe a alcohol/nitrous 1350.

Start out with something like this. Drop it two or three inches. take off the seat, and have just a thin seat pan. Rear controls. America spoked rear wheel, maybe widened to a 200mm by British Customs. Either a Thunderbird Sport dual rotor front wheel (so it could be drag raced) or a spool, but 21" or so. Remove the front fender. Bob the rear fender.

One thing to remember: Bonneville is 4000 feet elevation.
If you're going 'open bike' as you say, It's going to be difficult to do 170mph.
I don't know my land-speed classes, but I'm guessing it's a non-turbo class?
If you can do partial streamlining, like a roadracer, try this:



The front wheel is one of the biggest aero-anchors on a bike,
if you do a dustbin fairing like this Moto Guzzi V-8, you have a good chance.
In the 1950's Guzzi got 190mph out of these bikes with a little over 80hp.

I was going to start out with no streamlining. The fairing would put me into the partially streamlined class. And no superchargers, turbochargers, or nitrous, for now.

My scanner wouldn't work, so I tried the camera. This is something I just laid out. Using the stock frame and rake, tank and bobbed rear fender.

Justin, you are on the right path with a large goal ahead of you. I believe Matt went 161.188 with a production Bonneville frame and a turbo charged engine. You can see the set-up up I used in the picture. I did add 42mm Mikuni's. This set up put me at 111.101 mph with marginal Salt conditions.
You will want to loose as much wieght from the bike as you go forward according to your drawing. I ran a 190 rear tire and that will do you fine for the Salt, a 180 would actually be better. Brakes are used very little on the Salt so unless you are going to drag race I would move them down the list. I would suggest finding a small gas tank, a friend offered me an old moto cross tank that held 2 gallons. I used Clubman bars which worked great, I would suggest either finding the short risers or go with clip ons to the forks to help get you as low as possible. Mine also has Ikon rear shocks lowered 1" and preogress springs up front.
Are you planning on running at the BUB event? I am looking forward to watching your project progress. I am working on taking the TT600 Turbo back this year so if the economy allows I will see you there!

What organization is this record with? Looking at the AMA records it is showing 150.502 mph A-AG 1000 set in 1975 on a Triumph. Instead of destroking the engine I might suggest putting the big bore kit in with all the extra engine messaging along with making the special construction frame and you will be closer to setting a record.
The highly modified Thruxtons are right at the 150 mph mark so it will take some good engineering in the chassis and engine to break this 34 year old record!
If you are planning on riding at BUB download the rules book and get out your highliter. Of course the rules are left to "interpertation" so be sure to ask questions.

That record came from the 2008 SCTA/BNI Rulebook that I have. I didn't know that the AMA record were different. That will make it a alittle easier. I was trying to figure out if I should spent tons of money on building a 750 or probably the same amount on a 1000 or 1350 class engine. In the end, I'd love to hit 200 mph. I just figured starting out small to get some laps would be best.

For your first year at the Salt it is suggested by many to go to BUB where you will likely get more runs in and you will be able to learn a lot about the motorcycle side of LSR. Speedweek and SCTA has a lot of cars at the event which effects the track conditions as well.
Depending on your mechanical abilities and how deep your pockets are choose a class and go for it. From what I have learned with the twin you will be able to get to 130 mph at a reasonable price; after that every mile will come down to how much is put into both the engine and the chassis.
It looks like the 2008 AMA record for A-AG 1350 is 163.675 mph set in 1977 on a Kawi.
You might consider the 1200cc stroker this year and then go to a turbo next year. The record for A-BG 1350 is open in AMA so you just need to get in two solid runs and as long as you feel it is the best the bike can do that year you have established the record!

I was wanting to run in the Modified Production class, but the SCTA rules state that the seat and handlebars have to be about the rear tire, unless stock is lower. So, if I was top lower the bike or remove the seat, or both, I would be below that. With that said, I would have to run in Speacial Construction unless if I change my plans. I'm going to email the tech directors for SCTA and BUB to see what they say. The stock seat is about level with the top of the rear tire at the stock ride height.

Here's a better picture of the bike I drew. This is almost nuts on what I want to build. Stock frame, stock rake or close to it.

Justin, Welcome to landspeed racing - from now on you will be reading and trying to figure out what the rules really mean. The drawing looks good. Will you still have suspension after you have lowered the bike? Some have gone to a solid strut in the back but becuase of the uneven Salt surface it is better to have some suspension. I have a solo seat pan that I was going to use and just put a piece of 1" foam over it to fill the grooves and give some comfort.

I think mine would go 171mph..by the time it hit the ground from a mile up. I cut the front springs to even out the rake since this picture was taken. I like that spoiler thing behind the front wheel. I'll have to get me one of those..

Ya, I'd try to have a little rear suspension. That way I could maximize what little traction I would have. And try to have a little comfort.

Probably be very easy to put a hardtail on. Probably have to bolt the bottom where the original frame bolts are for future engine work so you can disassemble the frame.

Shouldn't you be able to use the hole behind bottom frame rails? I think that is where the center stand would mount. Maybe it wouldn't be strong enough with only one bolt on the bottom of each side. I've thought about a hard tail too! I would make things so much easier!

The one bolt at that dia. wouldn't be a problem with a grade 8. It would be pretty narrow right there though and have to do a pretty drastic bend to come out to the width you would want. Might lose some side to side stability too.

Maybe a cross bar and some gussets there with ears that mate to those hole would work.
