I'm changing my air filters this spring. I have stock but not sure what to put on. I've heard mixed reviews of the freak kits. I also remeber seeing pics of bikes on here with velocity stocks dual filters. Those are what i think i want. Anyone have any thoughts or pics of these preferably the velocity stacks. I've seen them made out of pvc elbows.

I wouldn't go with straight velocity stacks. It isn't worth taking the chance with the engine internals drawing in unfilted air. Purchase the Freak or alternate high performance systems that will support the carbs with the air box removed and give a substantial boost in performance maintaining the integrity of your engine.

Are you looking for something like this? This bike is davespain's. Maybe you can send him a pm for more info. If you just want to go with the dual filters, the pod filter part numbers are: LEFT side RC-2890 and Right Side RC-2900. The airbox removal kit from newspeedmaster or british customs are only needed if you want to keep the chrome side covers. Or you can cut out you stock air box to fit the pod filters and keep the stock mounting points. Search for "ghetto freak" if you want to go that way.

Here is a set of filters (both sides) on ebay right now for a good price, they are over 40 bucks a piece if you order them from AutoZone or wherever. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Triumph-S...es#ht_562wt_950

Just remember, you gotta match your inflow with your outgo. To get the benefit of increased air intake, you need pipes and jets to match. It's only money....

roadworthy... those are exactly what i'm looking for. thanks for the info all. I'm going to pm him and see if i can get some pics and build info. I went from stock to TOR's and now jc whitney 32" turnouts. I'm sticking with the turnouts. I'v rejetted both times but I'm still missing the right intake system.

You will still have to re-jet again with the K&N's. In the classifieds, there is a jet bank thread, you might be able to get what you need there. In the tech vault is the jetting calculator, should be in the intake/carbs thread. Post pics when done!

Hey Brian, Those turn outs i got from Lowe's the are 1 1/2 abs (3 or 4 bucks for both) I bought a (i think)1 3/4 radiator hose most expensive part from auto parts store and used that to couple the turn out to the carb and the original rubber couples the turn out to the filter, all are fastened with stainless radiator hose clamps...piece of cake to put together. They dont really get in my way , my right leg touches slightly but with a shorter person it might be worse, Really for the $ and little time it takes to do this its worth a try. The may be some better shots of it here http://s317.photobucket.com/albums/mm381/shockhappens/good luck

Just so I'm clear, the radiator hose bridges the elbow and the carb(the elbow doesn't fit into or over the carb). and you would use a total of three clamps per side. And there aren't any other mounting points other than the hose clamps. Would these be labeled "velocity stacks" for the rejetting calculator?

One website you may want to look at is Mikesxs.com. They have their own version of the K&N filter. According to their tests they get better filtration and airflow compared to the K&N. And @ $16.00 a piece definately a good price difference. I plan on trying these this spring. I was told that the 54mm would fit our carbs(dont hold me to that, anyone out there ever measure the carb openings???) Jack Filters

These are velocity stacks. No filter. Some have a screen but still lets lots of dirt pass into the engine.

Those are some great shots of your bike Dave. Im guessing you had to fabricate something to support the carbs from the back, right?

Thanks Duck, Yea its just like the one that came with the Freak kit....small flat piece of aluminum with a rounded notch on the carb side (fits on that cross over tube that goes in between the carbs) and bolted to the frame and painted black. You can hardly even notice it

How do those turnouts sound compared to TORS? Have you removed the internal baffle? I've been tempted to try a pair, but don't trust JCW quality so much these days.

Was the JC Whitney quality ever good??? I remember as a 16 year old with my first car buying parts and getting the stuff and not being happy with it.

Awsome man, I'd really like to try something like that. I really want to get rid of the airbox, but imho that is so much more badayce then the freak.

I don't deal with Whitney anymore. When I was a kid they took my $300 and I never got my parts. I was not quite old enough to drive yet so that $300 was a whole lot of money to me. I wrote several times explaining that very thing and they never even bother to reply. This is back when they went bankrupt and the restructured.

I got my turnouts from someone here... I thought they said they were Krome Werks or something and if im not mistaken, new they wernt more than 50 or 60 bucks new. I have never actually heard TORS before but I really like the way the turn outs sound (they are loud though) but me likes loud!

Sorry to hear about that, Dog. I had a not-so-good experience with them last year, but nothing like that. Think I'll pass on the pipes.

I've had no problems with JCW or Steadfast. I've made a half dozen transactions with both over the last two years. Now, as for that BIT_H from Chicago,...

Hey Dave, on your photobucket page i see your battery mount. Did you order that, have someone make it, or make it yourself?

you have to make it, I used the stock batt box and mounted it to a piece of flat aluminum that i put a few bends in it painted it and then mounted that to the bike. Easy really...someone here has drawings(plans)of it, i cant remember who it was. Maybe do a search on it, ill see if i can find what i went by

excellent man. I might go a different route, but I'd hate to get 90% done and have no where to stick my battery, and no plan B. haha.

Haha, was born and raised in hudson county, Kearny actually. Im over in Belleville now, Essex. That really looks pretty simple. Your removing 2 peices off the original bracket, and attaching the 2 new mounts, right? How is it with mud and dirt up in there? That blocks enough of it?

Essex?....we're gonna have to ride one of these days. I PM you when it gets a bit warmer out.
Anyway, I rode with it for a year (about 3000 miles) before I took it off to paint it black. When I took it down I barely had any grime at all. I just wiped it off with a papertowel and spraypainted it. If you think about it, the way the tire is moving it releases dirt downward at the top of the battery bracket, not really the bottom part. Ive gotten caught in some really bad rainstorms and never had a problem either. Some guys on here added a fender piece to the lower part, but I personally think its not needed and takes away from the barebones idea. I think its been about 2 years now since I first installed it and about 7000 miles.

Thanks I drew that in CAD really fast. I work as a draftsman for an engineering firm.
Heres a couple more shots for you some old before I painted it, some new etc.

This one was more of a picture of the little toolbox I mounted to the license plate bracket, but you can see some of it.

Dave, is there any way you could add a pic on here of that bracket that holds up the rear of the carbs? Thats the only thing i'm really concerned about. As far as how the pipes sound, the turnouts sound much louder and look better in my opinion than the tors. When i bought the tor's i seen that they wern't drilled out all the way. and when i put them on they wern't as loud as i had hoped. these turnouts have one baffle in them and sound great. I'll buy another pair soon because the ones i bought were off ebay and sorta scuffed up.

A quick and cheap solution is to use a small turnbuckle. If you look in this picture..... you'll see a small nut and bolt thru the upper engine mount holding the turnbuckle at the one end. And the other end hooks on the back of the interconnecting carb posts.
