What do you guys do? I took mine to Walgreens to have refilled (They are advertising $5 refills, shoulda saved the $5!) Black was empty, color was getting light. So I take a 1/2 hour trip there, wait a half hour, go to pick them up. "Uh, Sir.... your uh black cartridge is uh bad, but I filled the uh color one". "Guess I'll buy another one, thanks". Walk around the store for 10 minutes looking for the ink cartridges when somebody directs me back to the ditz I just dealt with - they're behind the counter! "uh I figured you'd be back" "Well Duh!!!" Get raped $35 and tax, go home and the friggin color DOESN'T WORK! It worked when I left home. Two hours wasted! So I go back tonight with both cartridges. 45 minutes there on ice covered roads! Different woman. She tests and fills my color one only to tell me it's bad. So I ask her "Can you test my black one? maybe the other young lady got them switched" "Oh ok... yes sir, it's fine, that will be $5 please" Now I have 2 full black cartridges and have spent $40 and still need a color cartridge. Arrg! Two cartridges cost more than I spent on the dam printer!!!!!

I buy mine on Ebay very inexpensivly. I never bother with the refill crap. Mess to do yourself and when done for you are rarely full from my experience. I got 4 of each color for $14 I think it was and I have 6 colors. That includes the black.

Yep Stew, they gotcha. The marketers are darn smart that way. Printers are cheap, the stuff to make it go ain't. Another marketing blitz that really tickles me is all the cell phone and Ipod commercials. "Get a blah, blah phone for only $99," or "get the super duper Ipod that will talk to you, play music and do your laundry for only $400". Yeah, and then the air time plan to make them work is $70 to $100 per month.

Ian, Thanks for the ebay tip, I'm kinda ****** now and won't be paying retail for these again.
Rich, I've never paid for a cell phone and always get the cheapest plans.

Stewart, I use 4inkjets.com. They have "compatible" inks. I compared them on my Canon printer and can't tell the difference ( and I am a photographer). Their price was about 30.00 for 11 ink cartridges ( black and separate colors, 2 -3 each). Also if you go on dealmac.com they have lots of other sites for your ink needs... hope this helps.... Gordon

NEVER get those dang things filled...especially at Walgreens. What a ripoff. Been there, done that.
Sometimes, if you watch for a sale, you can get a whole new cheap printer for less than new ink cartriges. I've done that before.

Good point Charlie but it's not like their building these things out of something you would collect like antique furniture.

I hear ya about the throw away society...buuuut It's insane to pay the ink cartridge prices really. If I would take the ink out of the cartridges I buy and pour it into a gallon jug and fill that up, how much would that come to? Like I said before, it's ashame but sometimes it's cheaper to just buy a cheap printer on sale rather than buying the ink for the old one.

The one thing that generic inks don't have is longevity. If you want your pic's to last, use the manufacturers ink AND photo paper. For other things the generic is fine. The least expensive per page inkjet printers are the Canon models.

I have two inkjet printers and I haven't used them in years. I don't print much and when I do I do it at work. They don't mind as long as it doesn't get out of hand. Someday I'll copy Matt in the Printers/Scanners thread and get a simple B&W Laser and a nice little color photo printer.

Amen to that, plus they are plastic and forever in the landfill. We have finite space for that stuff unless we start shooting it into the sun. I remember rebuilding fuel pumps and they were actually held together with screws so you could pull it apart and replace the valves, diaphram, etc... Not anymore now they are crimped and made to be tossed.
