Anyone here into metal detectors?I've been wanting one for a while but the price ranges are unreal. What would be a good unit for a beginner?I have an opportunity to buy a White's Goldmaster 66t.It appears to be an older model not as high tech as the ones I've looked at online.Anyone familiar with this model?Help me brothers and sisters,I'm so confused.

Just an old Hippie and I don"t know what to do.

All the whites product I have had were good units. that's a pretty old unit. I actually had one. If its virtually free go ahead, but there have been a lot of changes and improvements over the years. Also a unit that vintage may need an electronic tune up to really be good. However it will still work for relic hunting, just not so good at discriminating from junk and coins.

What I know about this hobby would fill up 1/4 of a small Post-It note. But what I do know is that it's a heck of a lot of fun. I have a Garrett ACE 250 (entry level - about $175) and my daughter, son and I have a blast with it. We live on 1 acre and we've found around 40 bullets out by the bois d'arc tree in the back. Clearly it was a backstop for a range sometime ago. We have yet to do large scale hunts, but I highly recommend getting a detector. Good clean fun.

I have a friend that loves to go for hunts... he's very savvy on civil war battle grounds, routes etc... he has soooo many civil war artifacts... lots of bullets, pieces of cannonball shells, pieces of uniforms... he gave me one of the bullets since he has more than he can count... I wonder where the heck I put that sucker... good luck hunting

I have a whites unit that is about 15 years old. They have come a long way in performance since I bought mine. The entry level detectors easily outperform some of the older high end detectors. It's a lot like fishing really. A man with a cane pole sitting on the creek bank sometimes catches more than the guy with the new bass boat with the latest tackle. Its all about enjoying yourself.
