I noticed the other day that the stock pipes I had gutted are rusting pretty good on the inside. Not sure how far back it goes, but at least at the back end of the pipes. Thinking of picking up a Dremil tool to carefully grind the rust away. (other suggestions?) But afterwards, any recommendations on what I can do to preserve my pipes?

Are you doing short runs, or starting the bike up for short periods over the winter for example, that can leave condensation in the pipes?
With my old BMW I would take the silencers of once a year and fill them with used engine oil, drain and refit, this then burns/bakes onto the inside and protects them. smokes for a few miles mind you.

years ago they used to recomend putting a cap full of oil in the gas tank, this also lubricated the walls of the cylinder as well. used to smoke quite a bit.

Also good for coating the combustion chamber with carbon, increasing the compression ratio, and allowing you to eventually run the bike on diesel.

I ran short TOR pipes for the first 28k miles. At 500 miles I removed them, duct taped the ends and poured 240cc of olive oil in them. I then taped the inlet ends and around the slots, then tumbled and turned them until I thought they were well coated. I poured the oil out and off to a nice 300 mile ride the next day. When I removed them a couple years later, there was no rust inside to be seen. I am sure this is similar to tempering a cast iron SKILLET. Apparently, it worked well. I am using Specialty Spares long slash cuts now and I need to do the same, I guess (after i remove the packing material, of course).

Not anymore, I managed to polish all that crap off.
Now, they appear to be genuine, oxidized, baked low carbon cast iron. I'll fix 'em soon. Probably some kind of ceramic coating since the local plater won't allow them in his chrome vat.

Correct, and cast iron skillets aren't just for cooking either. (my wife taught me that one years ago).

I've seasoned many a cast iron and any kind of oil will work all though Crisco is the best, that would be kind of hard to get inside the pipes though.......Suggestion ....save up your bacon grease when your run through the neighborhood to burn in your pipes your neighbors will love you for it....HA!

I sprayed some WD-40 on my header bolts that looked a little rusty. When I went riding, it was like riding a deep fat fryer till it finally burned off.

That's what I've been doing lately Bob is spray the insides of the pipes pretty heavily with WD-40. By coincidence after I do that I generally don't ride for several days (thank you weather).
Maybe once spring decides to stick around I'll coat them pretty good with olive oil. Guess I'll just have to take a good long ride to burn it all......darn.
