Like the title says, my rear pads are almost down to the metal after a bit over 5000 miles. Is this normal? The front pads (both pairs - on a Speedmaster) have plenty of life left.
Not a big problem, as it's cheap and easy enough to replace them, I just thought they'd last longer. Maybe I use the back brake a bit more than I should?

Maybe a bit premature but the OEM pads don't last that long.

The rear pads on these bikes tend to wear out very quickly, as it's been mentioned by many members in the past. When I mentioned it to the dealer he suggested that I was resting my foot ont he brake pedal till I pointed out that I have floorboards and rest my foot on the side of them (nowhere near the pedal). The sintered metal pads last longer but cause more wear on the rotors and tend to squeak annoyingly at low speeds. I guess short rear pad life's just one of the quirks of this bike.

I got about 4600 miles out of my original rear set. The EBC kevlars seem to be doing much better, but I also try to use the front brake and the engine more often.

Hey Simon Sounds about right mate!! Mine lasted probably the same. It's the putty they make 'em out of ... just doesn't cut it. Piece of p!ss to change. You probably ride like me (Gawd help ya'!) and favour the rear brake slightly (how I was taught) - especially at slow speeds. Quote:

Hey Jeff,
I use the organic EBC pads. The sintered ones are a bit more abrasive on the rotors, but many members have them installed none the less. The organics range in price from 25 to 30 bucks at most motorsickle shops.
the organic numbers EBC FA196 front pads EBC FA214/2 rear pads.

I was running the organics for a while, my biggest complaint being how much they dusted. Then I went to the HH pads, and regretted not having bought them earlier, they stop so much harder than the Organics do, and don't dust a quarter as much as the Organics do.

left and right handed? Sounds like the dealer sold you the front pads. The front and rear pads are different. Check out your local motorsickle shop. You know the family owned ones. Chances are they sell EBC brakes and you get to spend your money with friends instead of giving it to a$$wipe dealers. Steve's cycles sells pads for about 5 bucks less than the dealers. And the EBC pads for our rides are used on lots of Honda models too.

arrrrgg!! is nothing ever easy? i called 5 places, no one has the EBC FA214/2 rear pads so i go to my "dealer" (spit), the one who doesn't stock any f'ing thing and right there in one of their counter books it says EBC FA196 for both the front pads and rear pads. i say "look i'm pretty sure that FA214/2 are for the rear and i remember them being different, front and back, last time i did them." to his credit the counter guy did look in the ebc book and another book and confirmed EBC FA196 front pads and EBC FA214/2 rear pads (meaning their other counter book is as worthless as their in-stock merchadise). but of course the pos dealer(spit) did not have the EBC FA214/2's so for now i'm still searching. AHA!! speed's cycle just popped in my head!!

Possibly, if not probably. Check out the 'taper braking' technique at Tip 30.

www.bikebandit.com has the EBC pads, both Organic and HH, for most of the triumph models, I've found them to be a pretty decent source of aftermarket stuff for Triumphs.
