On flight from New York to Charlotte apparently hit a flock of birds and took out both engines, pilot landed the airbus into the Hudson River. All passengers (100 -135) have survived..

I just read that on the BBC website.
If I were on that plane I'd be doing a lottery ticket tonight!
Good to see all appear to have gotten out safely.

Everything went right-good piloting, in the right place and on-the-spot water rescue. Not often it happens like that.

Wow... that's a close call. Hats off to the pilots and all for averting a major disaster.

155 people, 150 were passengers. A little luck, a little skill and everyone is going home!

The "reporters" have gone into blather mode. Just heard, "Bird strike is such an odd phrase. Is there any way to stop this from happening once it happens?"
I guess you might be able to do that if you can exceed warp 10.

I hear those lucky enough to drive a DeLorean can stop it once it has happened.

so if you land on the water, the plane floats, you are forced to wait on the wing for a water taxi in frigid temperatures. What is the protocol for claiming your carry-on luggage?

I'm not an expert, nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn Express lately, but from my USAFR days I do remember that bird ingestion has been a bane of aircraft since the reciprocating engine/prop days. Jets are much more easily damaged due to the critical balance of the rotating turbine wheels that make up most of the engine. Airports have been looking for ways to keep birds out of their flight paths for decades, including everything from scarecrows to sound emitting devices spaced along the runways.

The pilot of this plane was a seasoned veteran, a licensed flight instructor, and an F-4 fighter pilot in the Air Force... the fact that he went back through the plane twice to make sure everyone was out makes him a hero.... beyond being able to land an Airbus on a river without it breaking apart..... We need more heroes like this..

That was one heck of a feat you pointed out there, Deon.
Has to say something about the plane too.
