HI folks! I just aquired my first Triumph. it's a 76 T140v. I have not been able to start it yet and I'am waiting for the parts/maintenance manual to arrive from ebay. I really like the bobber retro look and would like to get that with this bike. So.. one of the questions I have right away is what is the largest wheel and tire that will work with the stock forks ? or is changing the forks necessary ? any other suggestions or cautions on this kind of project ? Thanks for any info !

Hey Dave. While I wish you luck, depending on the condition of your new bike, I'm not sure what you're thinking of doing to it is a good idea. And this site is very friendly, but more dedicated to the newer Turnips; especially Bonnevile America's and Speedy's. Best wishes.

But many of us, like me, have quite a collection of old bikes too. Should probably be posted in "other bikes" though.

I think you would, in the long run, get much more satisfaction from the bike by restoring it to factory stock condition. But whatever you do have fun with it.

With me it depends what I start with. If I start with enough to restore it then I do that, if not enough there to make it worth it I do a custom of some sort.

Ok, now I got it. I didn’t realize that this was generally Bonneville America's. The bike I purchased was advertised as “a mild custom and running†but I could not start it when I got it home. The bike is beautiful and there doesn’t seem to be any thing wrong that I can see at a glance, but as I mentioned I am expecting the manual to arrive any day. Then the fun begins. Thanks every one for the guidance thus far.
