A couple of mates were over the other night and after a few beers started talking of making the trip to Sturgis for the festival there.Obviously they ride Harleys but it got me thinking about riding the Speedie over. Given we're from Australia there are numerous logistical problems to overcome, but it got me thinking about it. I really dont know a lot about Sturgis except its mostly Harleys and seems to be a full on party for about a week. Just wondering if anyone has been and what their impressions of it were.

I went last year, don't believe the hype about it being a bunch of rowdy law breakers... I had a blast, and the riding was some of the best I've ever seen. I stayed at a bed and breakfast in Custer, South Dakota... about 70 miles from Sturgis. WildMike also went last year, he's from your neck of the woods, maybe he'll chime in or you can pm him for logistical tips. I saw only nine Triumphs there, 4 were Rockets a couple Bonnys, and 3 America/Speedys. I'm really glad I went, a lot of the guys here will say don't do it, too expensive, too crowded, whatever. I will be going back, not this year, but within the next couple. There is a lot to see and do out there, if you can make it, do it. But, be ready for all the old timers to tell you about the Bonneville/Trophy/Tiger/Daytona/Speed Twin they used to have that they never should have gotten rid of.

You might want to contact New Zealander member Wildmike who did it this year. I would suspect that logistical and paperwork etc. issues are similar.

Bedouin. Blessed are those eyes that have seen more roads than any man! (Homer).

Been to Sturgis and I think it's better before or after the rally when you have the roads to yourself. The rally isn't what it used to be.

Yeah Ian, that kind'a reminds me of one of Yogi Berra's famous lines:

"Nobody goes there anymore...it's too crowded!"

(and yet another...."Remember to always go to other peoples' funerals, or else they won't go to yours!")

Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Any time of year that area is worth visiting. We had a BMW rally in Gillette Wyoming (just west of Sturgis). The riding through the black hills is great. Here is a link to the photos we took.

True. I forgot about winter. Minor detail.
