Time Magazine's "The 50 Worst Cars of All Time". I don't quite agree with the entire list...

This is my pick for the one that shouldn't be on the list.

The 1986 Lamborghini LM002

Quote:

This V12-powered super dune buggy gets on the list — well, my list anyway — purely because of its appalling clientele.

There's nothing wrong with the vehicle, his only problem is that it was favored by a very small market, oil sheiks. I don't think that makes it a bad car.

Quote:

The luxurious LM002 appealed to spoiled young Saudi sheiks wanting to cross the sand to survey their oil field holdings. Uday Hussein, son of Saddam, had one

Bad choice for the list in mt opinion.

Let my dying thought be that every mile was fun and let my tombstone read,"They never made one fast enough for me."

Gee, the Pinto? The Gremlin? The Yugo? This list is mostly the low hanging fruit combined with the oddities. Like Time is some kind of automotive authority. And I agree on the "Rambo Lambo"--their agenda is showing.

I had a 76 Pinto and it was ok for $2300 brand new. Maybe I'm not objective cause it was my very first car but it didn't seem that bad to me. Very spartan interior but it ran ok and was great on gas. Parts were cheap and I could do most work myself. I traded it for a 1979 VW Rabbit which was a great car but all most 3 times the price of the Pinto. I did get $1200 on the trade which seemed awesome. That meant I drove it for about $400 per year. Not bad considering.

They did get most of the cars on everyone's bad list in there. My brother had a Corvair SS with 180hp 6cyl. and loved it. The main reason the Corvair and Pinto have to be on the list is due to their horrible crash results - the real life ones and the test ones.

Yeah, they weren't safe cars especially by todays standards. When you're 16 and you have wheels you don't care about safety that much. I always said that I ride a motorcycle. That's more dangerous then any car so what's the difference. I did bring my Pinto in for the recall but I'm not sure I'd ever want to test the recall.

I agree, I should have been able to see Times agenda here. This list isn't what it appears to be. It's a bunch of liberal hogwash and prejudice statements. Kind of an attack on Western society. It's disguised in a seemingly harmless topic of the 50 worst cars of all time but it has an underlying theme that becomes evident if you read more than a few of the comments on each vehicle. Thanks for pointing out the model T. It hits you like a ton of bricks when you read that commentary.

The English Ford like my uncle had should be on there. The same uncle had a Corvair and it was a great car. Had lots of fun with it.

I think the main reason Pinto would be on there is the tendency to explode in a rear end collision. In the yard we sold every suspension part we ever got for those and the Mustang II. Those were the parts people needed for those kit cars.

I had just glanced at it too. Actually they have the Edsel right up front on the main page and that was actually a good car just poorly marketed. I have to go back and have a read of the Model T I haven't read that one yet.

Now I see, I just read the Model T review. In addition to the comments like "sand under boots" crap it is just wrong. They were very dependable and versatile for the day. They did everything from haul goods on a truck conversion to plow fields with a tractor conversion to just plain get people around as a car. I see several still working versions at Jacktown every year driving around.

The recall consisted of a longer fill tube, a ground strap, and a plastic shield between the tank and the axle.

Wasn't bad work for a flat-rater. Ford paid 1.1 hours to perform the job, I could do it fifteen minutes total, including driving it in and out of the shop.
And it seems like I did several hundred of them

The H-1 Hummer is missing from the list

I had a red 57 MGA and a blue MGB that I scrapped. The A was cool and fun but it got wrecked for me. I wanted an MG TD but never saw one that I could afford.

The worst car was my 1986 Caprice station wagon. It had an electric pump for the brake booster istead of a vacuum booster. Failed 3 times-each time with my wife driving my kids around. Chevy wouldn't own up to it so finally I put a vacuum booster from an '85 in(had to channge the brake pedal, too). let's see-then it blew the intake manifold gasket-then the fuel line started leaking. That was the end-sold it for $1200 with only 40,000 miles.

My first car was a 73 Pinto. Ran great for about two years. Had the larger engine , but I hated it. In 76 gave it away to my younger brothers who were in high school and bought the first of many 320i BMWs. Didn't buy another american car for 20 years.

Other than the Cadillac 8-6-4-2-1-0, that list is pretty much BS. But, you can't expect much from Time (the great faker of "exposes") and the communist news network.

I owned a Pinto, but before that my room mate in college owned a Perfect red 61 MGA and a met green 66 Pontiac Catalina stationwagon. He prefered to drive the Pontiac, takes all kinds huh? Well I pretty much owned the MGA, what a cool fun car to drive. The author of the article says he loved his cool MGA, but it was mechanically crap. Well later my Pinto was crap, but not close to cool.

MG TD ? Definately extreme cool.

No Worse Car of all time list is complete unless it includes just about every car ever produced by British Leyland. In particular the BL Morris Marina i used to own. Holy Moly, now that was a pile of crap disguised up as a piece of shite.

Leyland motors took over Rover in 1967.
Leyland Motors became British Leyland in 1968.
Well after those cool old Land Rovers became a fixture in Africa.

Land Rover and Range Rover were some of their better vehicles. But the likes of Maxi, Metro, Maestro and Marina were truly awful cars. And don't forget the that wonderful addition to the British sportscar, the Triumph TR7. If you could get a good one then they were wonderful cars, (i was lucky, i did get a good one) but some of the horror stories that surrounded that car.

OI! My mum has a TR7 and loves it. OK she gets bored of one then sells it on and buys another one... her current one is a lovely shade of metallic blue. Not a standard colour, but nice all the same. And a convertible. It needs a bit of work but will be ready for the summer...

While I'm actually bothering to reply.... I kind of had foresight that the Stag would be on the list - they always seem to be... despite the fact that a bit more research and the engine would have been fine. The best answer though would have been to put the Rover V8 in... The Triumph V8 is just too complicated - two timing chain that are adjusted individually, they don't like not having antifreeze in - but it has to be the right type. All year round.... And other things, but as I've only had one cup of coffee so far I can't be bothered to get them from the back of my brain somewhere...

Yes my parents have one of them too.

And a Range Rover..... Third one of them too. But my favourite one they'd had was the one with the 5.6l Chevvy engine in. Went like $hit off a shovel.

Gina 03 America - Pretty stock - except the TBS wheel... 06 America - missing, presumed in bits. With it's TBS wheel... 09 America - It's very blue....

British Leyland made some great cars. I owned a '71 MG Midget and a '74 MGB-GT. Loved both of them. True they had Lucas electronics but the handling performance of the cars was superb. I also owned a '67 Sunbeam Tiger that could not be driven slowly. I guess I loved British motor vehicles which probably let me to buy a '71 Triumph Daytona bike.

I've owned a lot of cars many of which were trouble free, but none were actually more fun than the British sports cars I owned.

I would have agreed about the Ruin-o dauphine, but I don't consider that to be a car, so it doesn't belong on the list. The only thing going for it is that it was better than the 4CV that it replaced. A fried of mine bought a 4CV at a bargain price when they were clearing them out to make room for the Dauphine. A few weeks later, it rained when he was driving and water poured through the wrong way facing cooling louvers directly onto the engine.

My mom had a '72 Pinto, I couldn't kill it. Terrific car for less than 2 grand out the door. One of my first cars was a new '74 Gremlin. That thing would smoke the tires as long as you wanted. Never had any trouble.

And what the heck did they think was wrong with the Overland Octo-Auto anyway? Geez, no imagination.

I mean it's just obvious that the inventor didn't want to be bothered by flat tires. OK, he'd HAVE lots of them but they wouldn't BOTHER him.

I grew up with a guy that had a Gremlin with a V8 in it. I can't remember what 8 it was anymore but that car was indestructable. We beat that thing worse than any car should be beaten and it never died. Did have an intermittent electrical problem but nothing that ever left us sit. Finally junked it when it rotted so bad the battery fell through the floor.

Another Pinto owner here. My first new car was a '79 "European Sport Special Edition. I consider this model the forerunner to todays "sport compact" scene. Yeah, I was a trendsetter. Okay, it was similar to the Rallye Edition, just with different tape stripes.....

Plus the guy picks on the Aston Martin Lagonda!

He missed a lot - almost anything US, early 80's was pretty horrific - Ford Granada, Fairmont (drove a 4 cy with 4 speed). Dodges of that era, etc.

MG does not count in the BL debate. The only thing BL did to the Midget was drop it from its line up and the only thing BL did to the MG B was to raise the ride height and add those godawful rubber bumpers. But lets not forget that wonderful addition to the MG line that BL introduced. The MG Metro and the MG Maestro, what an abomination they were.

There was going to be a BL replacement for the MG B, but instead BL ditched the B and put the TR 7 into production. The Sunbeam Tiger were great little cars but i believe the Sunbeam comany went the way of the Dodo long before BL came into existence.

During lunch today I was reading closer that guys comments. A lot of his comments are (how can I say this nicely) extremely wacko anti automibile politically correct. for example:
Model T: A century later, the consequences of putting every living soul on gas-powered wheels are piling up

Scripps-Booth Bi-Autogo: The Bi-Autogo does enjoy the historical distinction of being the first V8-powered vehicle ever built in Detroit, so you could argue it is the beginning of an even greater folly.

There are others.

Of the cars that I totally disagree with on his list are:
Lotus Elite
Amphicar
MGA Twin Cam
Triumph Stag
De Lorean DMC-12
Plymouth Prowler
Chevy SSR

Cars that should be on the list:
Ford LTD
Renault Le Car
Datsun B210
Citroen SM
Austin Allegro
Hyundai Excel
Geo Metro
Dodge Omni

OI! My mum has a TR7 and loves it. OK she gets bored of one then sells it on and buys another one... her current one is a lovely shade of metallic blue. Not a standard colour, but nice all the same. And a convertible. It needs a bit of work but will be ready for the summer...

I had a metalic green TR 7 convertible and absolutely loved it. The TR7 production was switched between production plants and those cars that came from the Speke factory in Liverpool are generally known as the best of the breed. All of the Speke cars have the big metal TR 7 badge on the front, whereas all the other cars have either the TR7 decal or the Triumph name decal on the front. Of course the best TR7 of all is the TR8 with the rover SDi V8 engine. That is the car that the TR7 should have been from the beginning. 80% 0f all the TR8 produced, and there wasn't many, are here in the US.

The Amphicar was a way cool ride. I don't know how good or bad they were but I used to see one on a fairly regular basis. I always wanted one that and the Sunbeam Tiger like Max had as mentioned above.

I love the Triumph Stag, great looking car. And how anyone can include a Lotus on the list is beyond me. They have produced a few duds over the years but not many. I wouldn't mind a Lotus Europa to drive around in, or a V8 Lotus Elite.

Man this thread just keeps reminding me of cars of my youth. I had a Matchbox Europa , always thought that was a cool car. Had no idea at the time what a car like that would run me.
