I can't imaging a new Indian being marketed for $30+. I would think $20+.
And you may see me tonight

Way out of my price range, but a beautiful motorcycle. For this first year at least, they're basically a semi-custom, handmade bike.

I have said it before and I'll say it again, with no lower priced model they are doomed from the start. Like HD has the Sportster , Indian needs a cash cow. Especially in this economy. I fear the global economy is gonna kill the new Norton too, too bad really.

OR...to paraphrase Kenny Rogers..."You picked a fine time to start up a new high-priced motorcycle line, Lucille!"...right Ian???!!!
(BTW...I agree with everything you just said)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Perhaps not. The new owners, who apparently have deep pockets ... seem to have other ideas about the market segment they are aiming for.

Keep in mind the owners are the ones who revived Chris Craft boats, too, and those ain't cheap. They don't sell a ton of them, but they sell at enough margin that it makes money.
I would love to replace my Sea Ray with a Chris Craft Launch 25 but it's about a $15,000 premium over Sea Ray, which is considered one of the top boats made.
You can make your money by margin or by volume....

I sure love the lines of the Indian. And ya can't beat the Indian head on the front fender (they still do that?)and the big swoopy fenders. Gotta wish them luck, although I'll never be able to afford one..

Never said I didn't like them just don't think they are going to make it with no cash cow. I also hope they got the flaws out of that bottle cap engine or they are doomed reguadless. Glad it isn't an HD knock off with Indian trim this time.

Stopped by the local dealer today who just opened. I'm VERY impressed with the bikes. The quality really looks top-notch.
Talking to the sales guy, Indian is running a small factory and plans to make 750/year for the first few years. I guess the margin is enough that they can make ends meet on that volume. It seems like an attainable number to sell 750 bikes nationwide in a year when the local Hardley dealer sold 1300 last year in Omaha alone. What will be interesting is that there's 70 dealers opening across the country which leaves each dealer about a dozen to sell a year. They must have a heck of a markup or plan on selling a lot of accessories if they are going to survive!
Overall, the fit and finish was phenomenal. I was really impressed that there was virtually NO PLASTIC (Mr. Bloor - hint hint!) anywhere on the bike. The indian head light on the fender was metal. The dashboard around the speedo was painted metal. The housing around the buttons on the handlebar? You guessed it, chrome metal. Good color choices, lots of options.
The seats and saddlebag leather looked top-notch as well. You could tell it was a tough, thick, heavy duty leather.
6-speed Baker gearbox, Brembo brakes - good names attached to it.
Yes, the price is tough to swallow at a base of $30,000. But, I hope they make it. Maybe I'll be able to afford one in 7 or 8 years when I am out of school and have the loans paid down a bit!

Was there problems with the engines during their last go? Also what were they? Just curious. They are beautiful bikes though.

yes first time they had engine problems with their own engine, they had HD knock offs in them for a while. I don't remember what the problem was anymore and the HD knock off engines were fine. Only problem with that was they were nothing but a HD wanna be with Indian styled tins. I would like to see them make a go of it and needing only such a low volume maybe they can if the economy doesn't get in the way.
