Well I just got done cleaning my bike, and lo and behold I found a broken spoke. Well not broken but it looks like it came unscrewed from the rim. Now I'm wondering how long I can ride to get it repaired? The dealer is @60 miles away what do you think? Thanks

Get another nipple and take your wheel to someone who can break the bead. You can take it from there.

I have ridden many miles with a broken spoke because I was too lazy to change it. That being said the best thing is to fix it right away. All the spokes should be the same tightness, if not you will end up breaking another one. You should also check the wheel for true when playing with spokes.

Riding a bike with a broken/detached spoke's asking for trouble unless you either remove the spoke or secure it somehow. and even then not something you want to do. With the spoke missing the rim will be out of true giving you really bad wear on one spot of your tyre, and the surrounding spokes will be taking more punishment than they should to make up for the missing one. A short-ish ride to get it fixed should be fine, but I wouldn't push it past that. There's only 40 per wheel, and they're the only thing holding your rim on.

Use a piece of tape and make a sling between two other spokes to make sure it doesn't flop around. That will get you to a dealer if you can't get started back in the nipple. If you leave it loose it's sure to flip out sidways and booger the fender or shocks or what ever it whips around and hits. The whole wheel should be tuned by someone who knows how to do that or the wheel will become warped.

One of Vera Lynn's nipples -- broke --, the spoke was fine. I had a friend break the bead and I installed a nipple off of an NOS front rim I had laying about. Tightened it to the same pitch (finger nails dragged across the spokes will let you here the tension) and well, that was the day I left for the '06 Nor'Rally like say 31,000 miles ago. You can order a nipple or the dealer should have one. Breaking the bead is the hard part.

I used a zip tie to secure it when mine broke.
