I had to work in Manhattan last night with a crane co. so my brother and I decided to ride in to the office, pick up the guys and the trucks and ride home at 2am. I picked up a pair of fleece lined "big smith" pants at Models. They kept me nice and toasty. I threw on the ninja mask, my biltwell and some jackets and I was good to go. However, my fingers froze to the point of stinging numbness. It dropped down into the 20's last night, definatley the coldest I had ever been out in. I would have no problem doing it again if I could find a pair of gloves that "really" worked. I can't see paying that much money for something that works as well as it's 20dollar counterpart. Has anyone invested in these expensive gloves, and do they really work?

Work as in keep the skin on your hands from being sheared off to the bone during a get-off, or work as in keep your hands warm? Or both?

Also mountain climbing / hiking places like REI. I bought a set of Mountain HardWear mittens that keep my fingers toasty all winter without being bulky.

Only gloves I ever used that actually kept my hands warm and comfortable was a pair of Navy surplus gauntlet gloves. They were real sheep skin and were a cross between mittens and gloves. They had 3 fingers together and your trigger finger and thumb separate.Wish I still had them, they belonged to my grandfather, he had the whole suit.

A note on the gloves I posted about, I haven't been able to find them in the last 20 years. Wish I could.

I just got a pair of Tourmaster, electric gloves. I've always used snow-mobile gloves in the past. No compairison! They're a pain to put on and you have to string the wire through your coat sleaves, but at 20* f. it's like driving your car. They arn't cheep, at 139.99, but as someone said earlier, you get what you pay for. Check www.://cyclegear,com , They are the cheepest I've found and they come with the wiring and controller at that price.

I was looking at the Tourmaster plug-in jacket a month ago in Wenatchee, WA (they didn't have my size in stock). I've read similar comments aboot the gloves. Some people commented aboot the "eveness" of heat in the gloves?? Other folks here have Gerbing gear & they like it. My plan is to be electrified over the winter.

Something like THESE?
Not even close Bill. The finger configuration is the same but that's all. The gloves I am talking about used to be issued for service men above the arctic circle and are extremely heavy and real sheep skin. They keep your hands warm at 70 MPH even in below zero riding. I mean warm too , not even a little cold. No wind penetration at all, hands are as warm as sitting in your living room. Like I said I haven't seen a pair in 20 years and I have looked. I would guess if I did find them they would be way out of my price range.

I remember those gloves. I pulled a lot of alert in the Air Force up in the Artic. They were very big, heavy, and WARM. On another path, I just ordered some rain/wind over gloves at Aerostich. They are made to slip over your regular gloves: http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/Rain-Glove-Covers-p-1-c-443.htmlI ordered the unlined ones, as they rollup very small & I can keep them in my saddlebags all the time. The lined ones appear to be much more bulky, but testimonials say they are good to below 20 deg F, over your regular gloves.

I recently broke down and ordered the Aerostitch Elkskin Gauntlets - the ones with the Merino Wool lining.
So far so good, but no doubt there will be a ride when they too, are not enough. My Triumph Highway Gloves have gotten to where the left glove tends to slip off my left jacket sleeve, letting wind up the sleeve. That may be as much the jacket's fault, but I never had a problem with it in years past, and this year it has become a nuisance, happening multiple times on a single ride if I scratch my nose, or reach for a vent on the helmet.....the new Aerostitch gloves have a taller, stiffer gauntlet that I don't think will ever do that.
Electrics seem to be the best solution, but I have yet to install a socket to plug them in to.....

Well, if you use a Battery Tender that should have an SAE connector & most of the electronic clothing that I have seen come with or have optional SAE connectors...that seems to me like a natural fit.
If you ride in really frigid weather you can add these under your winter gloves: Frank Thomas AntiFreeze Glove Liners

I am going to try these. http://www.dakine.com/ski/gloves/guys-gloves/global-series-value-and-comfort/scout-glove/ I tried them on at a store and they are warm and come with liners and a rubberized palm. VERY comfortable and warm, but no real road rash protection. Clay

Ian; TOMV,
I have these Air Force aircrew mittens sitting on my table, nice jpegs in my iPhoto, but Arrggh how do I post them to the site? In the sailing forums you just attach them, but not here I guess. Computer knowledge? I can't even spell out IT. Little help?

first upload them to a host site, I use photobucket... once it's loaded, the easiest way is to click on "direct link" next to your pic... you can attach them in the instant UBB code box... click on "image", paste your pictures url.... good to go

Still not the gloves. These are Navy issue (maybe other branches) from WW II and probably for some time after. They are heavy sheep leather with the wool left on the leather. Then turn the wool to the inside and stitch them up and there you have it. Very heavy sheep leather gloves with the wool inside. Warmest things I have ever seen or worn. Like I said my grand father had them and I used them a few times, he had the pants and jacket that went with it too. Kind of resembled a flight suit, may even have been one, not sure.

Here's the shell label, hopefully a little smaller... [image]http:// [/image] No trigger finger, but very warm. Had the full suit, but tossed it - stiff, very heavy, ok for eel spearing thru the ice or ice fishing, but that's about all.

Nope, The whole glove is one piece. The gauntlet part isn't sewn on. No zipper, snaps, straps,or laces. I wish I had a picture. They are dark brown leather on the outside with just a small spot at the top with wool around the cuff.(not sure cuff is the right word)Very basic, nothing fancy. And they had the navy stamp on the back of the hand, no other tags.

No, but that is the closest I have seen yet. The gauntlet is longer, the fir cuff isn't as wide, and it is sheep skin not what ever fur that is.

nope again but even closer. there is no seam between the cuff piece and hand piece on the ones I mean. Those also look hollow and the ones I mean have too much uncut wool inside to have a caved in area like you see in that picture up where your fingers would go. The gauntlet is also flared too much on those. The end of the gauntlet also has woll sticking out like you see on the end of the cuff of the jacket I pictured. We are getting closer! I did a Google search and an Ask.com search and came up empty.

try the image search. when you put your terms into the google field and hit 'search', at the top left of the results should be "Web Images Maps News Shopping Gmail more", with web highlighted, because that's what you searched. hit 'images', and it will give you image results for the same search. 'trigger finger mittens' has oodles of results to pick through, and some of them have to be close.

I'll give that a shot, I didn't know there was any other way to Google than the regular way. This really isn't important unless someone can actually get them and I am doubtful of that.
