Can anyone help i would like to know if you remove the ignition control unit and just run wires straight from the pickup to the ignition coil will it still run or does the ignition control take readings from other things wired to it too work.

that's a good question... being able to completely bypass the part if it fails would be a good thing on the road

errr.. I doubt it'd work (tho if it did, would be much better than spending huge amounts on a new one). As I understand it (correct me if I'm wrong) the sensors are hall effect which simply change resistance when a magnet passes them. They're nowhere near strong enough to act as ignition points, and wouldn't carry sufficient current to let the coils charge & discharge, even assuming the resistance goes high when the magnet hits them rather than low, and also assuming they're actually at 7 degrees BTDC (or wherever this engine fires) instead of some other location that the black box extrapolates from.

If you really want to do away with the ICU you'd need to strip the sensors, put in a cam & some ignition points, and do it the old fashioned way. You'd also want some sort of vacuum and/or mechanical advance system too. (eg: centrifugal weights mounted to a rotating back plate.) Lots of trial and error there.

At least then they'd just slowly deteriorate and be repairable by Joe the plumber instead of going flaky and costing a fortune.

Like someone else said, the sensors won't activate the coils. In addition, the control unit manages things like pulse duration (equivalent to point dwell) and advance. A better solution is to figure out how to repair the existing units when they fail.
