I only have few riding days left. 40F is as low as I go. How do you prep your ride for the winter's nap?
I'm thinking of "stable" for a full tank of gas and run the carbs dry.
Is there anything else that needs attention?

if your not gonna touch the bike for a few months,battery on a trickle charger , maybe raise bike up off tires, wipe all the shiney parts with wd40 .stare at it luvingly at least once a week

Beings I dont have a garage, mines going in the open part of my bedroom, wifes not to thrilled. But hey, climate controlled and I can at least sit on it and pretent.

I will go down to 22F (as it happens we hit that this morning) so here in the ATL there are very few days I won't ride. But I do miss the perfect days that are only a couple of weeks behind us.

Change the oil too. That's very important as acidic compounds can form in oil as the engine is run.

With the Stable added, no need to run the carbs dry, in fact its better to keep gas in everything so gaskets, etc. don't dry out. Rest depends on where the bike is kept. If outside in a shed, etc and really won't be ridden for a while, I'd probably add some steel wool to the end of the pipes to keep out critters. Don't forget to pull them out when you ride.....they make interesting mortar rounds.... Quote:

When I go on a long business trip I drain the carb bowls. It makes a huge difference, with the way the bike starts upon my return.

The air box makes a convenient nesting site so block it off as well as your pipes if you're mothballing the bike for the winter. Then leave a note taped to the handlebars so you'll remember to "unstuff" your openings before you fire it back up.

Dude come on guys? You mean to tell me you don't keep her in the garage and at least start her every week just to hear her purr? I put stable in the tank, and every year, it never fails. We'll get a semi warm day, and I take her out for a spin. I get a wild hair probably once or twice a month to just sit on her and fire her up. I think this helps keep the fuel circulated, and the oil mixed well. I'll probably still change the oil before winter as its one less thing to do in the spring.

The bikes never get put to bed for the winter. They're always ready to roll if the weather permits, even if there is Stabil in the tank.
Riding below freezing is a dicey situation because of the risk of road ice. Heated gear makes a HUGE difference in comfort on 2 wheels as the temps drop. But just watch out for those slick roads in cold temps. Ride safe guys.

My wife also suggested the steel wool plugs. Last Spring I have mama mouse and babies in my airbox.
Coat the chrome with WD-40... good idea. I'm not too sure about going about lifting the bike though.

Last night may have been to cold for the bike, it was high twenties and she was running rough in the 3000-3500 range, until it got totally warmed up, which took about 10 minutes of riding after warming it in the parking lot. It was weird, it had never acted that way when cold before, and I ride in colder temps than that. At first I though maybe something was clogging the fuel, it acted like it was starving, but smelled like it was rich  How well do the pre-heaters work? There shouldn't be any way the carbs can freeze up, right? Strange....

Dave, FYI... I ride in those temps all winter and have not had those kinds of issues. It was 22 the other morning on the way to the office and I was thinking "Man, these bikes love the cold air."

See Thom, that's what has me curious. It's never done that before, but after it was completely warm, it stopped. It just took so long to warm up. I dunno... I know they like the cold, every other winter has been fine. I guess I'll take the carbs apart and see if anythings clogged or blocked or kinked.

OK, first, SON OF A FEMALE DOG I miss Anderson!!!!! And 40 degrees, we're at a whopping 27 here now, and it's dipping to 15 or so overnight! Can I have your 40, PUUUHHHLLLEEEAAASEEEE!!!!

No, they're certainly not Cancun-esque, but I have looked many a time in mid winter (in the Denver area at least and along the Front Range), and found it to be in the 40's and 50's and that my friend is ride-able! And, yes, things have slowed down significantly, and I have expanded my search to New Mexico and Utah to help the odds, but I've not stopped looking. I actually had what I thought was a done deal but the company never ended up getting the Navy contract that they were waiting on, so the offer never came through!(I guess the Navy procurement folk aren't aware of my illustrious Naval career!)  My company is starting plans to outsource some of our bread and butter (and nice profitable parts!!!) machine tool bearings to China, and there is a lot of pressure from our HQ in Germany to move us to Mexico, and houses are STILL $200/sq. ft. in our neck of the woods (plus the customary $3-4000 in taxes/yr), so continue to try I will!! Luckily, I'm too hard headed to know when it's time to give up!!!

Lay a foam back carpet (Foam less miosture permiable) or tarp. Cement will generate moisture condensation that will get trapped under your bike cover if you have one, if you don't have a cover a piece on the floor will still keep moisture off your babe.
I was going to go for a ride to the Post office to drop off a shipment yuesterday, Clear blue and 22, My Blue refused to start. Doesn't like below 28. Almost, but no cigar.
Battery trickle best investment to prolong life out of the battery (or remove it in the frozen climates) And place triclkle on it none the less they loose a few amps per month through normal course. But one hardwired to teh bike allows you to fire her up on a warm day (or warm enough day) After all tehy do ride snowmobiles don't they?
And Dwight, I don't want to hear anything out of your warm blooded pie hole. Just be content in the knowledge I know you are suffering for the rest of us!

Ah ...the joys of the American Southwest. No ice. No snow. It does get cold in the morning ..often as cold as from freezing to a low of 40. We even have an occasional cold snap with a few mornings in a row with sub freezing temps.
But.....no ice and no snow.....just fire her up and dress for it and off ya go. I think I drove my truck to work a total of three times last winter and not due to cold but because I had a cold and did not feel up to the task of riding.

Yeh, Cold is a crock. It got down to 13.9C (57 F)one day last winter.  Oh my God! I didn't know what to do.

You know your really not being nice about this whole cold weather thing. Been running in the mid 30's every night here and no more then upper 40's during the day mostly. Looks like winter is finally here
