Last Friday I went up to Myers Motorcycles in Asheville, NC. They're a Triumph and Ducati dealer. And what should be on the floor but a 2009 Ducati GT1000. I'd been admiring them from afar but had never thrown a leg over one or ridden any kind of Duc.
The kind salesman took care of both by inviting me for a test ride. It was stock with 15 miles on it and the salesperson asked that I stay behind him and don't go over 6000RPM.
So, I threw a leg over and found that my 29" inseam caused me to stand on my tippy-toes. That's a confidence problem 'cause my beloved TBA allows me to flat foot.
And off we went. This model has a wet clutch so engagement was fairly easy even right off. After 2-3 miles I felt comfortable and we went up I40 to the Blue Ridge. Imagine my surprise to find it was hard NOT to stay under 6000 although 5th was all I needed to maintain a steady 80mph on the slab (about 4200RPM).
Onto the BRP and the twisties and...

I was hooked.

What a combination of power, braking and handling!

Long story short, I take delivery next weekend.

Congrats Steve! Sounds like a fun bike.

Wow, congratulations!,Always liked the looks, but my 24.5" inseam prevents me from being comfortable on all but the smallest Duc.....

Always admired them. How do you think the riding position would be for someone with 34" inseam?

I rode a guys Ducati GT1000 from work about a month ago.Very nice bike.We did a role on in top gear from about 65 or 70mph.His Ducati did walk away from my 865Speedmaster,but not as fast as I thought it would. He said after riding my Speedmaster that he really liked the low end torque. The Duc seems like it has to be above 4000rpms to have the power come on.I did like it.Very nice bike. His Duc is School Bus Yellow in color,I call it that anyway.I really like the color on his Duc,but he wants to paint it.His has the clip ons.Clip-ons are NOT for me,he is getting tired of them already and is going to raise them up somehow. His does have a fuel problem, and so far they have not straightened it out.It has been to the same shop four times. This time he is taking it to another shop that has a dyno they can run it on and check out the fuel mapping, etc. He does like the bike, just does not like the fuel problem. His bike likes to backfire quite abit he tells me.I never had it do it to me while I rode it.I rode it for a good 30 minutes straight.I still think they are nice bikes.

Congratulations Steve!

I've liked the looks of the GT1000 for awhile, and sat on one at my local dealer a few weeks ago. Unfortunately, couldn't take it out, but the set up felt just right to me. Beautiful bike. Enjoy it

Will

A 34" inseam should put you flat-footed. As to the riding position, bars are lower and pegs further back than the TBA but still an upright stance. There is both a riser kit and/or a complete handlebar kit to further modify the stance to really upright touring posture, if needed.
As to fuel problems mentioned, there was a recall on the '07 bike's fuel system...loose fuel line connectors.
Thanks for the kind comments, y'all.

Is it this bike?

Congratulations, you live in the exact right place to enjoy one of these.

Sorry Ed...all that came thru was a box with a red x in it and the bike doesn't even remotely look like that.

I love this bike, but it is very similar in style to a thunderbird sport, which I have, so I guess I'm kinda biased.

What color Steve?

Yup, that's it. Mine will be charcoal gray with factory leather bags, Termignoni silencers and windscreen.

i like the new retro dukes
having had a duke monster i know how they handle brake and play
the old single cylinder 250 and 350 cafe racers are very popular in spain
quite a few survived and used in spain
even though i prefer black bikes i rather like the yellowy orange ones
cool bikes
