Actually it a clone! Yamaha parts fit.

I'm hoping my wife rides more than that. If not, that's why I bought cheap!

Hard to understand why anyone in the West would buy a Chinese motor vehicle. Hope your family has adequate life insurance.

Ignorant people said that. Chinese manufacturing is not nearly as advanced as Japan was in 1970. I know; I've been there.

You'll be surprised at how many Lifan manufactured engines there are in this world. You probably own, or have owned one and didn't even know it. Lifan makes small engines for just about every small engine user out there. This particular bike was engineered by YAMAHA(it's a virago clone) not Lifan. They just copied it.
As to Chinese MFG of the bike that remains to be seen. For 1 Grand I'll take my wrenches out and make sure everything is safe.
Next winter if she's still wanting to ride I promise to sell this to some poor schmuck, and buy her a proper Asian bike.

Thats a perfect bike for a starter....If she drops it your not out much,(hopefully thats not the case) if she likes riding you upgrade her... still not out. If she doesnt ride it you sell it, still not out. Looks like a good deal to me

If you're lucky, it won't kill anyone. I would never trust my life to this stuff. It's truly ironic how
Westerners defend purchases of Chinese products. Chinese mainlanders themselves prefer not to buy it.

That still doesn't explain what you are scared about. Do you think it will spontaneously explode? Sounds like ignorance to me.

Incidentally Chinese ride Lifans everywhere. I'm done with this thread.

They also drink contaminated milk. Doesn't mean we have to. I don't know everything that might go wrong with your new cycle, but every product I've ever purchased made in mainland China suffered catastrophic failure. That might be OK for a camera or answering machine, you're only out a few bucks. A motorcycle transporting you or a family member at 60 mph is a different matter. Not only would I not buy one, you couldn't pay me to ride it. Sorry, I just think you've made a mistake. You asked for comments on this by posting, and I offered my opinion. It's certainly nothing personal.

Well, gotta add my 2 cents here ( OK more like about a half a cent with the current economy ) My buddy started in the scooter and minichopper business a couple of years ago... and although I would never have bought any of his products from back then, he now sells Johnny Pag customs... Well, for being made on mainland China, I see no issues with these bikes in comparison to any other bike in the price range of them... The only real downfall ( I have ridden a few ) is the lack of power, however they are no more underpowered than a 250 rebel.... ( they have a 300 twin )

It's really cool that she is starting to ride her own bike. I know nothing about that brand, but a $1000 for a bike that she'll outgrow in six or eight months because she will get more comfortable riding, is awesome and a good choice!!

It's okay, Clay. Ya got a couple of negatives. But you also got a lot of positives. Jack was just giving his honest opinion. Everything in context, dude. For myself, a thousand bucks for a starter bike like this is wise, and a good deal. She can ride it for a while in the summer and see if she likes to ride. This is way better than my aunt, who spent five thousand on a 500 jap bike, and another thou on clothes and accessories, and rides it twice a year, maybe. Ride on!

I wouldn't be too worried about losing money to upgrade.
If you buy a quality, in demand bike, used, at a good price, you should be able to sell with minimal loss after a year or so.
If, on the other hand, something bad happens, like major damage, then a throw-a-way ($1,000) bike isn't a bad loss.
Selling the Lifan, as others who have bought simillar brands of "starter" dirt bikes have found, may (will) be harder to do.
The biggest problem with the Chinese bikes are cheap steel, low quality welds, and Triumph quality shocks.

As a follow up to this thread, my wife has 200 miles under her garter now. I think she has decided she is liking riding again. SHe already picked out her upgrade. Yamaha V STAR 650 Custom.

I told her someone has to ride the Speedmaster when I upsize to a T-Bird.

Either way she is already saying she needs more get up and go, and that she wants something heavier as this one gets blown around in the wind too easily.
