I like the Nikons. I have a Nikon Coolpix 4600. Its been a great camera. Good pictures, easy to use and small enough to carry in my jacket pocket.

Canon powershot SD750. Great pictures, easy to use, compact, rechargeable battery, and under $200.

just remember that it isn't all 'megapixels'. the lens will have a really large impact on the quality of photos. leica lenses are really nice, and come standard on a couple different cameras.
are you just looking for a point and shoot, or are you looking for a SLR (single lens reflex) camera? SLRs, by and large, take better photos, but don't do video, most don't have an lcd preview screen, and they're often much bulkier. PAS are easier to carry with you, and many take quite reasonable shots. They're also several hundred dollars cheaper, lol

canon makes good stuff. the g9 is a good PAS, from what i understand. a little less expensive would be panasonic's lumix camera lines.

Panasonic TZ5. Panasonic has some of the best ratings with CR.

What's your budget? Nikons "tend" to have the best lenses. I personally use an Olympus SLR, which I absolutely love. It's an E-510 with 2 lenses for about 600 dollars.

I recently bought a Canon SD870IS point and shoot. It was rated highest of all the p&s cameras at the time. I really like it for it's size and picture quality, but I'm no photographer... Like anything technical or electronic, you have to determine how they would use it and how technically savvy they are.... Once you have that in mind, do a Google on "camera reviews", then you'll get a better feel for what's out there and what kind of money you're looking at.

I have a bulky Sony and a slim canon Digital Elph and I find myself reaching for the Canon more often even though I subjectively perceive the Sony as a better camera. Get one they'll want to use and is easy to carry so they will. Quote:

I found this to be the truest of all; I exchanged a larger megapixel camera for a lesser after I found the printed pictures weren't as good when I thought I had "upgraded". It's really all about the glass when it comes to the more expensive camera options. In the pricier cameras those Lumix use Leica glass and Lieca's legendary for quality picture taking ability.

Here's a great site for you. You can see test results for just about all the cameras on the market today. http://www.imaging-resource.com/If you are looking for a SLR check out the Nikon D40 and the Sony A200. They both have great reviews. I currently have a Sony SLR, the DSC770. It's an older model, one of the first digital SLRs that came out and I am about to retire it and get the A200. Have fun shopping. Paw

I have an Olympus FE-210. I like it quite a bit. I've had other brands (Sony, Nikon, Toshiba) and the Olympus takes the best pics so far and is quite small and reasonably priced.

You have to be careful with the way you worded that statement. You're being camera specific, not Brand specific. I don't meant to criticize so I apologize if this comes out wrong, but I have had both Nikon and Sony which will take better pictures than the Olympus you mentioned. For point and shoot cameras, that FE-210 does an excellent job. Which model Sony and Nikon are you comparing too?
I currently own an Olympus DSLR (E-510)as my primary camera, so I'm not knocking Olympus.

I have a Nikon Coolpix S200 and have been really happy with it. My big criteria were that the camera be compact and lightweight so we are more likely to take with us and it have a good lens with optical zoom (digital zoom stinks).

Well, in the digital camera world even tho lens quality is important, the SENSOR is the most important thing to research, the better the sensor the better the pictures. Nikon indeed has the best optics in DSLR, however in compact P&S they have fallen considerably behind, almost to a point of serious financial trouble for the company. Canon now has the best sensors and optics combinations in compact P&S. At least this is what the experts say... in your research find info in nikon's pictures with bad fringing and color aberration on the edges... it has been one of their biggest problems with P&S cameras.

I've owned dozens of Nikon film SLRs and now shoot a Canon 40D. I've considered buying a good P&S myself, just so I can travel light. The problem is, most P&S bodies have no viewfinder, and those that do have one so poorly designed that it isn't useable. When I also condsider the slower lenses and poor noise performance, I just can't make the leap. Canon 40D, 50mm f/16, 25mm extension

Frank, you may as well have asked what's the best oil to use!!!
I use an Olympus C-8080 WZ (Wide Zoom)
Pro's: excellent results for everything but the fastest subjects. Fully automatic, fully manual and everything in-between. Excellent battery life (rechargeable). Been out a few years and so will be cheap enough. Looks 'pro.' (also, a pro would be happy with the results you get with it.)
Cons: bulky (not too heavy); only 5x zoom (hey, that's what legs are for); noise at fast film (ISO) speeds; long write times for TIFF and RAW.

I use a Sony Cybershot DSC-T9. Great camera. It is slim and does not have a telescoping lens which tends to get in the way and less mechanical. It has Carl Zeiss optics which are hard to beat. If you are looking for compact do not even consider SLR. They are bulky and very $$$$$$$$$. Before I made the step to digital I had three SLR bodies and lenses from 180 deg.fisheye to 1000mm tele and everything in between as well as every filter you could imagine. 28 years behind the lens and convinced that digital is the way to go. A) Anyone who shoots in bright sunlight B) Anyone over 40 who doesn't wear bifocals while shooting C) Anyone shooting in demanding environments D) Anyone needing maximum battery life E) Anyone sufficiently skilled to frame with both eyes open F) Anyone needing to confirm correct focus while shooting (TTL VF)
There are probably a few more, but I take most of this for granted until I pick up a P&S.

A vote for smaller is better as far as convenience goes, unless the recipients are serious photo folk who might prefer an SLR style. Having a good camera that fits easily into a pocket is a major plus. Small and black finish is cool too. Black body cameras often lend themselves better to capturing candid moments.

DITTO. Even the P&S units have several manual over-rides and user options. I'd like an SLR only because I was weened on the good ol'film SLR cameras and enjoy the ability to toy with the bells and whistles. However, my untrained abilities produce the same quality of pictures with either. I recommend a nice Canon P&S that you can put in a pocket and go anywhere with.
