I'm looking for leg and neck gaiters that are insulated and waterproof. I also want them in black or other dark color. Can anyone recommend a source for products like these that you've tried and had good success with? Winter is coming to Texas, and that means 40º temps and lots of cold rain.

Texans - You'd think they could handle MILD winter weather.

Just to set the record straight, I've spent plenty of miles in the saddle in sub-freezing weather. Colorado, NY, PA, VT, etc. What I haven't done is ride in 35-50º temps through sheets of water. That's what riders have to deal with here in the winter. Believe me, I'd trade this crap for some nice, dry snow and ice anyday.

Hey Jack, has or is Lake Travis filled/filling back up yet from the drought of 2006?
Last season I bought a "Anti Freeze" black balaclava style gaiter with windproof front panels from the local Cycle Gear, on sale for about $24.99. It is the best cold-weather gear money that I ever spent. If I can find the package I'll post more.

J&P Cycles has them in their cat. Got mine at a bike show in washington dc last year. keeps the neck toasty, but fogs the face shield more. I paid about $12.00. If you look for closeout sales at the shows you can get a good deal on just about anything.

Yep, I think the lake is OK now. We've been in a local drought most of the summer, but the lakes are fed from further upstream. Are you from this area?
Thanks for the info on the Balaclava!

No, although I wouldn't mind living in that area. Glad to hear that the water is back.

I've got the Knox Cold Killers Hot Hood and it's always maintained a nice temperature, despite me going out in weather you can see your breath in. Warm weather performance is good, too, as it doesn't get too hot. For the temperatures you're talking about, it should be ideal. I can't speak for how it'd cope with your summertime, tho. Durability seems fine but I've only had it 6 months or so. Looking at the current catalogue, it appears they've stopped production of the Hot Knees, which is a shame as they were something I was hoping to buy for winter. I'm sure they're still available in shops, tho. EDIT: they are still available and I've just ordered some, along with some under-gloves. Cold Killers

It was this one: Cycle Gear Frank Thomas Balaclava
I agree that the Frank Thomas Anti-Freeze stuff is the best there is. Lightweight, windproof, warm and it does come is black. I have worn mine down into the 20Fs with great success.

I just bought some leg gaiters (rainboots) from Rivco. Pretty cool, keep your shins and boots dry in the rain. Their site says they run large. I found them to be fairly true to size. I now keep them in my saddlebags. Heres a link: http://www.rivcoproducts.com/products/product.php?productid=235&cat=275&page=1

Just to follow up on all this, I bought a triangle-shaped bandanna device that's more water repellant than the typical fleece neck tubes. It closes in the back with Velcro and is extremely warm. Completely stops wind from blowing down the neck of my leather jacket and solves the problem of cold air in the helmet. The only downside is fogging of the face shield on cold mornings. I bought it at my local Triumph dealer, but here's a link at JCW's site: Windstopper Road Bandits For leg gaiters, I bought a set of Outdoor Research Crocodiles. I was hoping to find something that would zipper up the back for fast on/off, but no luck. These take a few minutes to put on, but not too bad once you get the hang of it. They're available all over the Internet. Finally, I'm also now carrying a pair of rubber pullovers for my non-waterproof leather trooper boots. They were less than $10.00 at Cycle Gear, and fold flat for easy carrying in my pack. I also carry a rainsuit. At this point, I'm pretty much all set for rain and/or temps to the mid-'20s on my daily commutes to work.
