I am trying to shorten the chrome rod on the taillights of my '04 and was attempting to remove the nut from inside the license plate area. I see the housing is cast and I'm afraid to break it as the nut is not coming loose. I presume there is really no way to shorten this cast piece and a new aftermarket part should be bought. Is this correct?
Thanks Moe, that gives me an idea, but still having a hard time removing the bolts from the stems as it is. Not sure why....I still didn't get a clear answer from these past posts, but will look further into what I can do.
They use a super locktite it will come off without breaking. Now to get the stem out of the other end once you get both nuts off put both on one stem and tighten them down to each other as a lock nut. Use two pieces of wood to keep from marking up the chrome [first remove the lens from the turn signal] then place the unit in the vice and tighten it just enough to hold it and then use an open end wrench on the bottom nut to unscrew the stem {IT IS TIGHT]. Then go to Ace hardware and buy two chrome 1 inch spacers and two pieces of the things that go into a table lamp that hold the light socket on and 8 nuts to fit them. You'll want to put 2 nuts on each end, [at least I did] Also you'll need to cut the wires somewhere along the line of this process so make sure that you leave enough to solder them back together. Any other questions feel free to send me a private message. Be glad to help. Phil

Also I had bought the pieces for the lamp from Lowe's they were either 2 or 2 and 1/2 inches long. And the nuts came from Ace hdwr. Fit without any cutting.
