Today was the 8th annual Rumble Through the Tunnels in support of Fleet Week in the Tidewater/Norfolk area. It's used to raise funds for the local Navy & Marine Corps Relief Society, and this year over $6100 was raised. The command I work for just happened to be the one presenting the check to the Society today. A number of us volunteered at the event and were able to roll out in the first group. I helped with the lining up riders as they came in after registration...and saw some very incredible rides! Aside from my America, I saw 2 others, a R3 and a Thruxton. Could have been others but that's all I caught.
We rolled out about 10:30ish from Harbor Park in downtown Norfolk. We made our way through 2 of the waterway tunnels in the Hampton Roads area and ended up at Bayside HD in Portsmouth. As I said, I was in the first group of riders; unfortunately just after getting on the final stretch, there was an accident about a 100 yds behind me...caught it in my left mirror. Reports had 2 or 3 riders going to the hospital. Still haven't heard anything from local media about it and I'll grab a paper in the morning.
Aside from that it was really a great day and mother nature worked quite well with us. Haven't heard of a final count on number of riders, but it was massive. The dealer could only fit about half the bikers that rode. The one thing I would like to know is how much of the raised money actually went to the Society. My girlfriend commented it didn't seem like a lot of money considering the number of riders. Told her I'm sure HD had quite the high overhead. I'll poke around when I get back to work and see if I can get an answer on that one.
