I never clean the chain. I just pour on enough grease to drown everything aft of the passenger pegs.

Depends on the type of lube you use.. I clean them every time I lube them.

Spray it down with WD-40 and wipe it off with a rag.
Once a week should do it.

None from me. Use a Comet Cleanser / Chlorox Bleach mixture if it makes you happy.....

If it won't move, use WD-40.
If you don't want it to move use duct tape.

Okay. All theories abound. So here is a base line.

every 500 miles spray liberally with Chain Wax, wipe every bit off. Still dirty? Repeat. Done.

more involved: Kerosene. Dip tooth brush in it and brush away. Wipe off excess. Blow it off gently if you have a compressor. Lube it.

less involved: never. lube it every 10,000 miles or so.

Ride on gritty roads much? Gander at your motorsickle. Let your gaze wonder to her chain. would you want a chain in that condition? Do ya feel sorry for your motosickle's chain? Then that would be the time to use the more involved method.

You can purchase all kinds of gizmos and fluids to lobotomize, er clean maintain your chain.

so you see, there is no absolute way to absolutely clean a positively muddled chain. Practically speaking.

.....wipe it off?......why didn't I think of that!.....now I know why my chain and sprocket collect so much ******!.....always wondered why everyone else's chain stayed cleaner than mine.....

Put a rag in the palm of your hand, hold it behind the chain above the exhaust and spray the cleaner/wax and wipe the chain immediately, continue till chain is clean and do the sprocket also..takes about 10 minutes..I do mine every 500 miles(4-5 tanks)and before a long run day..over 12000 miles on chain and will repla ce when at 2nd to last adjustment(approximately 25000 miles)..keep it clean and adjusted!!!

life is good..I am retired..sold my America in 2008,bought a Rocket and sold that in 3/2013 and now own a new Triumph Bonneville T-100

500 miles. give or take. i.e., every time 000 or 500 appear right justified in the miles part of the odo.

cept when I trek. Then I get to it every 1000 miles or so.

I use Motex chain cleaner in a spray. then DuPont multi-lube which also cleans as it lubes. 10 minutes tops-I remove the chain guard and front sprocket cover-spray away-bolt it back up-good to go-10 min. tops. Chain looks brand new at 10,000 miles.

I usually clean and re-wax my chain about every 500 miles whether it appears to need it or not. I clean with a towel soaked in kerosine, wipe with a dry towel, then re-spray with Maxim's chain wax. Once a year I remove the sprocket cover and clean anywhere I find any wax build up. The bike has stayed very clean.
