While cruising this afternoon I heard a strange new noise coming from my '03 BA. Sounded like a loose piece of metal striking the pavement every now and then. At first I checked the kick stand. I didn't have time to check everything today, but there was nothing unusual I could find in a quick check over. Gas has been scarce here lately and I am wondering about the quality of the fuel. What type noise does detonation make in our bikes? The noise didn't seem to be affected by engine speed.

Hey Jackal, I've heard that too, the past week after adjusting my chain. Are we out of alignment, do our cush drive rubbers need replacing - I am at 40,000 miles so maybe I do. But I just heard it after adjusting chain a week ago. Ride Safe, Dennis

Maybe the chain whacking the chain guard. Tension ok?

Check your chain guard's firmly attached. Mine lost the rear mount bolt at one stage and had similar symptoms - a metal grinding noise over bumps.

Check exhaust pipes. Could they be loose on the hangers?

That's what I was going to ask. If you have, the tab that sticks out over the chain that is attached to the mudguard could be hitting the chain (did on mine).
However, I heard that this was fixed in later versions....
