Really! I was on my way home last night from White Bear Lake, MN after driving down to visit Elfwolf and Loco and Mike from the site, it was dark and cold, and I had been traveling around 85 mph most of the way back when I looked down at my speedo after I saw a Trooper with a car pulled over up ahead and WOW, 120 mph! No kidding! Problem was, then it bounded up to what looked like about 150 and back to 95 then around 130 and I figured, too good to be true. But made my heart stop for a moment! Not sure what happened there but after I stopped for gas some 30 miles later, it was back to acting right...I think!?!

Better check your dilithium crystals. Sounds like your warp containment field needs a Level 1 diagnostic. Either that or your speedo is about to crap out.

What was the outside temp.? My speedo does the same thing when the season temps. start to drop. The faster I go the worse it gets but seems to be fine below 50 mph.

Hi Eddy, Yup, Had similar thing happen to my 12/02 america.. I was on the east coast of aust (i live on the west coast) and the bike had just had its 12,000 km service at a dealers. When i went to pick it up, the guy who serviced it asked me how long the speedo had been acting up...Never i said..Well , he said,it just showed 140 k/mh as i rode it down the back lane at about 15 k/mh..We checked everything and i took it for a ride..all ok...weird..He logged it into triumphs records in case i had further probs.. Then it gets weirder, The ride back home was about 4500 kms (approx 3000 miles)which took about 4/5 days and the same thing happened every day..Start up and start riding..all ok, stop to fuel up take off and the speedo would wind off the clock, few firm whacks and it would settle down again, all ok for the rest of the day no matter how many stops ??? next day same thing and so on, this went on for a total of nearly 7000 kms until it was replaced under warranty..In the meantime i tried everything, cleaned & lubed the drive the cable and the speedo mechanism, swore etc etc all to no avail, i have since learned that this is how they fail as my dealer has had some others fail since then, Triumph know its a problem so they should look after you...My speedy now has 19,000 kms and all ok except its extremely optimistic. ie reads 124k/mh at actual 110 k/mh or 76mph at 68mph actual.cheers, Tadpole

Might be a good idea to lube the cable.

+1 Just replaced my speedo cable. Top few inches just below the speedo were badly corroded and full of rust.

Well it was cold..42. Was fine all day today. An no, it was not the dilethium crystals dummy! I am using trilithium that was smuggled across the nuetural zone! Why would ANYone still use dilithium in this day and age? Sheesh Bro! Besides, I dig Romulan chicks! Yea, they only go to 120...but I was estimating how far when it bangs the 0 pin! Going to check the cable tomorrow. But really, it should be no surprise that my bike would actually go 120+, it is Blue after all and we all know that Blue rules, and others drool!

If it was 42 and you were doing 120, the bike wouldn't be the only thing that was blue....
Maybe that accounts for the surprised look on your Romulan babe's face...

No joke... I can tell you for a fact that you can peg the speedo on a BA. You gotta have your feet on the passenger pegs and lay down on the tank tucking in behind the speedo and headlight (tuck you arms/elbows in real tight against the tank) and hang on to it for a long time. It can be done.

I can vouch for that, a tailwind helps too... Mine also has an error of about 10% so when it hits the pin I should be hitting 180kms or thereabouts ??

the 790's with open pipes and the freak will do 120+. Takes a while to get there though. Down grades and a tail wind helps too.

Me too. Riding back from AR. temps in the low 40s upper 30s. Lost it at speeds above 85mph. Heard a mechanical whir when the needle dumped, which went away when I dropped to a moe legal speed. Speaking of, thanks for the brake pads! Nice non door prize. And the Patch! Gosh, had I been there for the non-drawing, I probable would not have non-won anything!
So what did you do about your speedo? Mine reads 5mph on her sidestand. and reads 10mph too fast when rolling. I was thinking that the slabbers in Florida really do haul tail. As I am rolling at what I think is 80mph till it occurs to me that i should look at the tach. the odometer seems to work fine though. Guess I'll judge speed by rpms. Although I have another speedo i could install. Would like to fix the original one as it has the miles on it.
Seems like Cinnamon Girl always likes to get nekked when she travels. I like women like that!
NH: Chain Guard and pillion bolt. AR: Right pipe's heat shield and speedo
P.S.: Happy belated birthday!

yeah, i'm writing to myself. just found this post from that san antonio guy. Thanks Ron. I'll take a look see. Quote:
The worm gear, that little L shaped deal at the speedo is what usually goes bad. Roll it backward slowly when in neutral and not running to hear it. A pepper grinder noise will tell you if its the worm gear. They are 40 bucks vs. 340 bucks for a new speedo that does not come with the worm gear.

Is there another type of riding position?

Uh huh, there sure is Erle. There's the Rollie Free method, as demonstrated below...

...but I suppose that IS a variation on the same theme here, huh dude?!
(and evidently ol' Rollie was never all that concerned about road rash...err...SALT rash, I guess in this case)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

Wish I still had my old speedo so I could take a pic or 2 of the guts and show yall the cause of ths issue. Not the cable nor a gear. A mechanical piece will either fail completley or not at all. Not intermitant. Think of something that......................... hmmmmmmmmmm, changes consistancy with temp. change. Bet nobody has this problem in the warmer months.

Would you just tell us what it was? Jeez. I did roll Cinnamon Girl backwards in neutral and did not hear a pepper grinder noise. Heck even while the speedo was buzzing out the odo worked just fine. So like you are eluding to, the problem may very well not be the 90 degree worm gear but something that is integral to the speedometer yet stands apart from the odometer. So Dennis, pray tell!

Grease !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes people, it's the grease between the two dishes in the speedo drive. Go ahead, ask me how I know this. If you noticed in some of the responses it was cold out when this occurs.
