Anyone done this? Can you powdercoat the entire wheel, assembled (no tire of course, DUH)? Would the bearings have to come out of the hub first? I wouldn't think it would hurt anything but you never know.

I've always wanted black spokes with a chrome hoop, but now I'm thinking about doing the whole wheel(s) black. I know this has been done to Speedmaster wheels, but I don't care about those...

I should imagine the bearing would have to come out John as the treatment means warming up the wheel to make the powder stick. The grease would run out of the bearing so render them useless.....

Wouldnt it be a little hard to spray the powder on something like that? Like around all the little nooks and crannies with the spokes and whatnot?

Anyone familiar with powdercoating knows that the electrostatic charge pulls an even coat of powder onto all exposed surfaces. It's much more efficient than painting.

SO...if you do it all assembled what happens when it comes time to replace a broken spoke, or what happens to the joint when a spoke needs to be adjusted or moves under load.

Two things here FJ:
1) Ask a powdercoater.
2) Stop being lazy and dissasemble the wheel...youll have all winter.

Actually, the front is disassembled for powdercoating if I just want black spokes. I still have my TBS wheel, extra 18" America hoop and spokes laying around. Actually I need to see some pictures - not sure if I want the hub black too or just the spokes.

Do you plan on coating or painting the lower forks?
If your rim, spokes and forks are black then a shiny hub may look off. If your rim, hub and forks are shiny and your spokes are black itll look good (at least to me).
You doing your brake caliper too?

The lower forks (and upper shrouds (lower shrouds replaced with gators) are already powdercoated black. You didn't notice back in July? I'm hurt.

Haven't thought about the caliper. Taking it one step at a time, bubba.

July was like child abuse...Ive blocked it...

In that case Id say coat the hub too. There is another benefit to coating the hub as well...you wont see the layers of bugs next July.

Other than being lazy and cheap, my only real reason for keeping the wheels all original would be that from a design sense I'm not completely blacking out the bike. My engine case is silver and I'm keeping the chrome engine covers for now.

My powdercoater was tellin me over a latte that he doesnt recomend powdercoating spokes, they flex while moving and wear the powdercoat off where the spokes cross. But I'm still gonna do it.

Obviously the wheel bearings have to come out before the entering the powdercoating oven, but this is something that we can do here before we mask off the bearing housing.

Kind Regards

Robert, if you're going to do that, how about looking into some black anodized(aka: "black chrome") spokes instead?

Maybe these guys can help ya...

I did, but I wasn't really liking them to much. I still may go back to them but not sure.

I just painted a set of spokes I've had laying around, red spokes, black rims. If it looks like crap or doesn't hold up, no problem take em apart and get em coated.

So after all this discussion now I'm leaning towards the Exile Cycles look, brushed finish. I'm a little leery about taking steel wool to the rims and spokes, but I have that 17" TBS hoop and spokes to experiment on. Not sure if I want to buy another rear wheel so I still have a set of polished/chromed stock wheels if I want to go back someday (unlikely). Or I can powdercoat the brushed finish wheels at a later date instead.
