I have my AI parts. After reading all the posts I even feel like I know where all the parts go, so thank you all. Will this mess with any other adjustments? I would hate to mess with a perfectlly smooth running bike. If not it's off to the garage with my wrenches.
Have fun!

You will probably have to adjust your pilot screws. Look at this pic below that I stole from Pat's site. Although the bowl is off, it still shows the pilot screw in the center top (the one in the recess just above and to the right of the left Phillip's screw). It is inboard of the two wires on the bottom of the carbs. This is an 02 carb and Pat already removed the EPA mandated caps to get to the screw. You may have the D screws. Take a small mirror and use it to look at the bottom of your carbs (pop off the wires first). If you see an aluminum disk with a very small hole in it, that is the EPA cap. If you see a D shaped screw head, well.... Regardless of year, the pilot screw location is the same.

You won't have to change anything else to have your bike run the same as it did before (except the exhaust will pop a lot less). But, while you are there, it would be a good idea to adjust the idle mixture as stated above because the factory adjustment is set very lean. Adjust one side for fastest idle, readjust the idle speed, then do the same on the other side. The engine has to be warmed up for this adjustment to come out right. When summer comes back, do it again, except add about 1/8 to 1/4 turn counterclockwise so it will run a little cooler.

I was reading some directions for removing the AI, and the directions mentioned removing the gas tank. Is it possible to remove the AI without removing the gas tank?

Probably, Frank.... but, not without un-needed effort. Tank removal requires; turning off the petcock & removing the gas line (needlenose pliers), un-screwing one bolt at the rear of the tank (under the seat), & LIFTING !! Oh yeah, then pull off the vent hose (under the tank), & get your wife to hold the tank until you've completed the AI removal.

.. my dealer fitted the alarm / immobilser and there was a micro switch under the tank which scared 7 shades out of me when I took the tank off and the alarm went off .. in a small enclosed garage ......
