Has anyone changed theirs, and what did you go with? Did it make a big difference in performance? It looks like you just loosen the chain and 1 nut and it's off. what say you?

That's about the size of it, of course you need to remove the sprocket cover first.

I went to a 19T. It helped with highway riding a lot. Brought the RPMs down so my pipes werent screaming at me the whole time. read more here and here

Obviously, I'd like a lower RPM @ cruising speed, but DON'T want to loose ANY get up & go. Normally, you don't get both, but sometimes it does work out. Anyway, what has been you're experience with the changes? How much excelleration is lost for a one tooth change and how much RPM drop at say 60-80 MPH?
And you may see me tonight

In all honesty I havent missed the 18t at all.I know it was a short move for me...18t to 19t but it dropped me enough to make a difference where I wanted to see it. As for acceleration...it was odd the first few lights but in the long run I dont remember what the 18t was like.
I dont lack for acceleration off the line at all...but then again I dont race from light to light.

+1 for the change to 19T. No loss of acceleration in 1st....just twist the throttle a bit more! Dropped at least 300 rpm's in 5th gear.

Glanced at the Tach yesterday when I was cruising steadily ay 60 mph.....3200 rpm. I'm guessing at 70, I'll be under 4000. Will check next time out.

Rode satxron bike in Az this spring and he has a 19 tooth. We were in the mountains I didn't notice any difference at all in terms of performance. The bike had what it needed in up hill slow starts in the hair pins.
Going to put one on my next change. Maybe tomorrow? I wished I would have had it on the way to New York, maybe my gas bill wouldn't have been so high!

I went from an 18t to a 17t sprocket. I like the instant acceleration i get when racing at lights.

go here http://www.gearingcommander.com/ and enter the specs: tire size - 170 / 80 / 15 rpm - 8000 (we hit the limiter about 8000-8500) rear sprocket on 07 is a 42 front sprocket on 07 is 18 The speed chart is about dead on...only very slight variances.

I am on year 2 with the 19t. No looking for 6th gear ever and enough hole shot to drive 2 up in traffic. Like Eddy said, once the weight is moving its about RPM and gear choice. You go up the hill in 4th and I go up in 3rd. Same speed, no problem. The bike does not have enough HP to run it at the 132MPH on a chart. I will cruise easily at 100MPH. Remember lower RPMs over extended periods means lower wear and less abuse on the lubricants. Then again, I don't drag race with this one. Its not made for that. Its slow, its a cruiser. I like to cruise but I am old so like all things slow.
I try to aggravate one person a day. Today may be your day.

I guess I will go with a 19 tooth and see what it gets me. Where can I get a smaller rear sprocket? (Dealership?) I have LOOOONG Texas Highways and would like to get the RPM's down a little. At least I think I do.

This will probably be my next mod, too. Even though I use my bike mostly for commuting, there's lots of 70-80 MPH driving involved. I really hate to lose any of the 1st gear launch, but every time the speedo hits 75, I wish I had taller gears. Don't think I can stand it much longer...

My bike also came with 17/42, but I changed to 18/42 when the bike was 6 months old. I think, like myself, most people new to the bike feel the rpms are high when they really aren't. Compared to a Harley, yes, but our bikes have a redline of 7500. With the 18/42 (stock now) running highway speeds 70-80 would be 4000-4500 which the bike would be happy doing all day long.
Just going from the 17 to the 18 I noticed a loss of take off oomph. This is part of the reason I did the big bore. I'm convinced the 18/42 is probably an optimum balance between hwy. and local. I got used to running at higher rpms. The bike performed better with no noticeable loss of mileage. The only way going up a tooth will create better mileage is constant highway running. Having to twist the throttle around town more offsets the difference.

Thanks for the link Deon.
Bob I have no (around town) where I live. I do know that the Triumph runs at a higer RPM than HD but I still think I might like a little higher gear than what I have. If I don't like it I can always go back to the stock. Right now it reminds me of a 340 Dodge Challenger I had with 355 gears. The 340 along with the 383 are big bore short stroke motors. When I first rode the Speedy that is exactly what came into mind.
Thanks for the input.
