okay. this might be a dumb avenue to explore (said the actress to the bishop) but i randomly came across these Peacemaker exhausts (www.peacemakersexhausts.com) which apparently have some kind of handlebar operated actuator which allows you to switch between semi closed (quiet) and open (loud) pretty much instantaniously.

Looks like the versions they've got won't fit our bikes (though i'm more than happy to be wrong on that) being more suited to V-twins but does anyone know of either

a)any reasonably simple modifications i could make to get it to fit (i don't know if our bikes happen to be magically compatible with..say a road glide

b)any other 'variable volume' solutions for our bikes.

i like the idea, living in a fairly quiet area, and was just wondering if any other manufacturers had started exploring this area.

that being said, was up at Devils Bridge last weekend and beginning to think i might be being overly cautious about my exhaust volume in comparison.

So I suppose you'd jet for the open exhaust and use the closed exhaust sparingly?

I have pondered from time to time if some kind of valve could be rigged to respond to pressure and yield to whatever flow was called for.
Something akin to a pet door or heat riser valve.

Yeah what about carb tuning.
They've had these sorts of rigs for cars for many years.
A simple tunable baffle is the old "lollipop". You get a washer that fits in the pipe, and weld a bolt to it. Drill a hole in the pipe and shove the bolt throught it with the washer in the pipe and screw a nut on. Now you can turn the washer open or closed how you like. But this is just for loud or louder.

I agree with John, jet for the open exhaust, maybe slightly lean depending how often you close the pipe and how restrictive it is. Running lean causes damage but too rich will too. If you are way too rich the extra fuel will was the lubricant away from the rings and cyl. wall and cause excessive wear. Running too lean will burn valves among other things. Slightly rich would be better than lean.

The only thing I don't like about their cheesy video is the last example. Like I want to hear what the pillion has to say...
