Has anybody had a problem with the paint on the tank filler neck? The paint on my tank is peeling off because of the gas fumes getting under it. I am going to try to paint it with Duplicolor automotive paint, which is to be gas resistant, but I am afraid that it will not last too long. Does anybody have any experience with such problem and could advise what kind of paint to use? Thanks in advance for any advice.

It's a common problem. The usual thought is that the fuel softens the paint and when you fill the pump nozzle chips it and knocks it about. Repainting (as you've guessed) will last about as long as the original paintwork. The only half decent solution I've found to it is one of these flush mount gas caps by Kurakyn. They include a chrome sleeve that screws into the tank filler (protecting the paint) which the actual cap screws into. There's been some problems with the newer style tanks but as far as I know the older ones (with the knee indent) should be ok. You need the vented version with the right hand thread.

Thanks for the advice. I repainted today the neck and orderd a Kurakyn gas cap. My America is 2003, so I hope it will fit. Best regards.

For what its worth, this problem is beginning on my 2003 Speedy...and is pretty bad on my new-to-me 2000 Thunderbird...

Mine is a 02 America. The paint came off the filler neck, and nowhere else. I waited to see if it would. I have never touched it. The paint is completely off of the neck, but so what? Nobody can see it, and the paint coming off is not progressing to anywhere else. Six years now and still no problem.

When I got my 04 used, the paint in the neck was very bad. I just stuffed a rag down into the tank to make sure no flakes would get in there, used a dremel tool and removed all of the remianing paint, vaccumed out everything, removed the rag and presto, good as new. In fact, I prefere the look of the tank neck without the paint to begin with. It is also easier to clean and prevent rust from beginning.

The new gas cap fits and looks awesome. It protects the paint as well. But if one problem is solved, another comes up. My bike malfunctions again
