After installing the specialty spares long slash cuts last year I have never been entirely satisfied with the sound. Yes they are definitely better than stock but I just couldn't get that "big pipe" sound out of them. I tried removing the glass packing - too raspy, different types/thicknesses of packing - still not what I'm after. I reasoned that the problem was the small I.D. of the baffle. If you take a 2 7/8 inch pipe and put a baffle in it with a 1 1/2 hole in it you lose the big pipe sound. So I set out to build my own. I used a 1 1/2 I.D. washer on the header side of the baffle to give the proper back pressure and set it 18" deep in the pipe. The remaining washers are 2 inch I.D and are held together by 1/4 inch all thread rods. This set-up opens up the last 18 inches of the pipe which allows the larger diameter to develop the low tone that I want. Fiberglass tape was added to the last 9 inches of the pipe. Now I have the low frequency tone without the harsh raspy sound. They are louder than the stock SS pipes but not too loud, the lower tone is not as irritating to the ear. At highway speeds they are fairly quiet. I have posted pictures in my gallery
