Behind you in traffic is an old HD bagger, a Paul Sr. wanna be maybe. He passes you, without a look (traffic) and you meet again at the next stop.

Verbal? ( waz'z up?)
Physical? (nod)

I did both... I think I scared him. He took off like a rocket. I think he thought I was a cop LOL.

Anyway...what do you do?

Somebody passes me and they don't acknowledge me, I don't bother. I pull up on somebody, I'll give a nod or wave.

Never thought about it that way. You are a man of great insight.
I wave to everybody (except scooters, of course). I think some of the sport bike riders are a bit surprised. I figure, hey, we're all on two wheels, right? (except scooters, of course)

I actually go out of my way to wave at scooter riders. It's fun to watch them try and keep control with only one hand on the grips...

Honestly, I'll wave at most anyone one two wheels - including scooter peeps. Some of those scoots are pretty cool, and some cities even have clubs with organized club rides. NOT waving would make me feel like an 'elitist' or someone who rides a Harley and thinks less of anyone riding another make of bike.

Tru Dat. I especially like waving to the scooters - I love the look on some of their faces. Like Sally Fields at the Academy Awards - "They love me, they really love me." And after all, they too are up on two wheels. Truth be told, I'd have a scooter in a sec. if I had a place to put one and enough money to support the little darlin.

I wave to everybody, including scooters. A lot of us started out on scooters/small displacement bikes when we were kids and look where we ended up, Triumph riders. Besides the fact that they are on two wheels also a lot of them are commuting to work or shopping and will add to our voice in our quest for better parking access, visability and general acceptance by non motorcycle public. And most importantly I just don't appreciate being snubbed and try to give the other guy a break (no matter what he/she rides). I know how it feels to be put down for no reason other than you don't fit someone elses notion of what you should ride.

Don't lose any sleep over it.
Wave when you can. It's just plain friendly.

There's a waving season

Uh-Huh - and its divided into mini-seasons.
Early spring - Everyone (except the snobs) waves to the point that a 100 mile ride will mess up your shoulder. One can actually become airborne via bird like arm flapping.

Mid-Season - Only wave to the lead rider of the opposing 200 bike charity run because you become well aware of the consequences.

Late Season - You've already waved to 98% of the people in a 40,000 sq. mile radius so you wave when your hand is getting numb to allow some blood to get to your outstretched hand.

Which makes sense, given that your waving arm is on the wrong side of the road

Cheers,
Brad

OK, closet scooter rider here. A fun ride to the Post Office, grocery store and such (and 90+ mpg).

Last week I had a HD (Outlaw, wearing colors, etc.) pull up alongside me at a light. He gave me the right of way and let me lead after the light turned. Staggered in the lane with me for about a mile until I turned off. In his defense, I was doing about 45 in a 35 zone, but it was still weird.

What's funny though is the crotch-rockets I meet on the road. As soon as they recognize it as a scooter, they try to "take back" their wave - guess they're embarassed or sumthin'.

Funny, real funny watching their expressions when they realize it's just on old fat guy haulin' A on a scooter - especially when they're in a group.

This one is a little off topic, but it 'sort of' fits in, AND it's a true story.

When I was deployed to Iraq in 2004 (Geez, it seems like yesterday), I worked in the Joint Operations Center in the Al-Faw Palace outside of Baghdad. The palace also served as Theater HQ for a 3-star Generaland his staff, and every coalition country had an office there as well. Even though we were in a war zone, the policy was to salute (technically, a wave of sorts)just as if we were back in the USA. Since there was such a mix of ranks and represented countries, it sometimes appeared like people were whisking away flies, there was so much saluting. EVERYONE thought it was kind of stupid, but that was policy, and policy rules. As a result of all that saluting, I suffered a temporary non-combat injury. I developed tennis elbow one day in my right arm from constantly bringing my arm up and down and had to carry my saluting arm in a sling for a few days. Laugh if you will, but it was pretty painful, darn it!!

I try to wave to all riders. I figure we are all facing the same dangers. I mostly get return waves, but a few of the HD crowd will not wave back. We are having our annual Street Vibrations event next weekend and it brings out all kinds including outlaws. The law enforcement contingent is going to be high because we are expecting fallout between two rival gangs after the recent killing in San Francisco. As much as my son and I wanted to attend this year, I am thinking this may be the year to ride elsewhere. With my luck I will be on a nice ride and get called out because someone decided that day was the day to shoot up the other guy.

Hey, watcha got against scooters?

I like to wave at them just to see the reactions. Most of the time they act like "huh, what----" then give back a uncertain little wave.

But I gotta agree with Pipedr---

I guess I wave at anyone, including scooters. The only people who totally ignore me and the wave are the occasional HD rider. But the most fun is waving at small kids in cars. Here I am, full leathers, beard, kinda rough lookin, sittin next to a car with a wide eyed little kid at a stop light. I really like the funny looks I get from them sometimes. They don't know what to think when they get a grin and a wave. And what the hey, maybe subliminally, they remember the Triumph logo on the bike or my jacket, and I'll see em again in a few years on a trumpet.

At stop lights I usually dont pull up right next to another bike, unless I am riding with them. I try to respect their space and some people dont like to be side by side in a lane.

On the road if a bike passed me and dont acknowledge me and I happen to pass them, I almost always will wave or something as I pass them. I'll usually only do that once if is we happen to kind of leap frog on the freeway otherwise it starts seem kind of silly.
