Hi all, I'm connecting a powerlet plug to my battery charger so I can just plug it into my bike as a means of keeping the battery topped up.

Now because the charger only came with alligator clips, I've cut them off and now I'm ready to join the wires to the powerlet plug. My problem is I don't know which part of the plug is live and which is the neg part.

Can one of you electrical gurus tell me whether it's the central prong or the surround part of the plug which is live ???

Cheers to anyone who can help me prevent some fireworks happening

I believe the middle part of the plug with the fuse is the live part and the outer part of the plug is the negative. I hope that helps.

goodonya Daniel , that's what I thought too so I took a punt and connected the wires as such and it worked fine .

So thanks for your reply anyway mate I appreciate it.

BTW, I have a testing light that I sometimes use to try and determine what's live and what's not (I think that's what it's for anyway), so I plugged into the powerlet to my bike and was just careful with the live wires at the other end. I then connected the aligator clip to one wire and pushed the probe onto the other and the light turned on . I then swapped them round and guess what, the light turned on with it also.

So I'm bug#ered if I know . Anyway, it's all been sorted but someone might want to chip in here if they feel like it and tell us for sure which is what. At least 2 of us think the probe part is the live part so that's better than no one knowing eh?

The center has been positive on every one I've ever seen.
Think you're good.

The test light doesn't care which way the electrons go, it'll light up either way.
The way to test would be to clip the light's lead to a known ground and then probe the unknown wires.

Right. Why didn't I think about that.

Thanks for the tip but I suppose I got lucky this time. I guess the worst I would have done was blow one of the bike's fuses and I have spare ones of those anyway. I just have bad visions of an old car I had a couple of years back and a loose wire around the engine bay grounded and all I could see was smoke everywhere

I am glad to hear that everything went well for you. I would hate to see a triumph go up in smoke!
