Ok guys like the man on the moon and few other events in my life I know exactly where I was on this day 7 years ago.

I was having a day off from work stuffing my face with crisps sweets and fizzy drinks. Lying on my couch.

It was a sunny day when the programme I was watching was interupted by film of an aeroplane crashing into one of the twin towers.

The world is a colder place.

I was taking my step-son to school listening to the radio. At first the news broadcast had said that it a was a small plane that may have gotten lost then lost control. 30 seconds later on the radio they corrected their assumption. The TV was on at work and everyon was watching what was going on and none of us wanted to believe that it was real. We did close work that day. The next few days were really strange as the skies were eerily quiet.

I was in a plane!
Flying to Zakynthos.
I used to avoid newspapers and 'Brit' places with giant screen TVs so it was a couple of days before I even knew what had happened.

1st anniversary, I had a minutes silence sitting in Oban beside the water.

About 3 years ago I was at the US war cemetery in Normandy.

I was just finishing work....it was about the last time I worked early shifts. I was waiting to go shopping with a mate, and was in the mess room. It was on the telly and I actually thought it was a hoax.
If only it was.

I was working on a bank vault removal, and my helpers wife called him when the first plane hit. Right away he said "It was Osama Bin Laden". I tried calling back home to talk to my folks being that my dad worked in the pentagon from time to time, and could not get through for 2 days. I was living in Tampa, Fl at the time and a bit removed distance wise but those were a scary couple of days. My heart dropped. My helper and I spent the rest of the day in the Radio Shack a few doors down and we saw the 2nd plane hit. What a sad day.

My life has really changed in those 7 years.
At the time I was bumming around doing a little farm work for my folks and a neighbor, after having been kicked outta college. I remember hearing it on the radio when I woke up at 9. And then being out raking hay and looking up and not seeing a single contrail in the sky.
My little brother had left for basic 2 weeks before and called home that night.
Catherine was living in Costa Rica at the time and didn't come home till June and still doesn't understand how the country changed for those months right after. When she got home we had switched over to what seemed like a fake patriotism to her.

My country, 'tis of thee

Lynn today embarks on a Jetliner from BWI.

Was coping some java and catching up on yesterday's mail. Lynn said to look at the TV. Dumbfounded, listening to the rain pitter patter on the tin roof, heart beating wildly a sadness overcame me. A momentary lack of reason as I fleetingly thought how tragic that terrorist attacked us. That our intelligence agencies missed this. My soul searched for some reason. A way to reconcile this madness. December 7 1941 brought me back to reason. Just as the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour had galvanized the Nation so too would this horrific mass murder. Our Nation had. Our Nation will.

Then the second jet hit.

God Bless America.

I really lucked out. We pulled in early off of a deployment (weren't supposed to return home until 5 or so days after the 11th). I was grocery shopping with the ex and our baby girl. Pulled our son out of school and I headed into work (knew I would be recalled). Told the wife to start packing and be ready to head north into the mountains. I could easily see a submarine base being attacked.

As I sat at my desk a young man 20ish came to me as ask if I heard the news. We immediately went online to see the second plane hit the towers. He asks “what does all this mean" my response was this is an act of war and we are under attack. He was very scared as was our nation.

A lady my wife worked with lost a son in the towers. A stock broker who was on the phone with his dad after the first plane hit. Silence after the second plane hit...................... A tree was planted in his honor.
Sad day indeed.

I did not think the world was coming to an end. I did however realize life as we had known it was forever changed.

At work when I heard about the first plane on the radio. Flipped on the TV and the co-workers gathered. Watching the second plane approach was the most difficult - we all knew what was going to happen, but were powerless to do anything.

I live near a small commuter airport w/ flight school and we're used to the planes buzzing overhead. With the no-fly aftermath, there was an eerie silence that only added to the gloom.

I'm grateful that we haven't had any more - unlike some other countries that still have to deal with that menace. Violence as a result of political disagreements, I can somewhat understand. It disgusts me that all that carnage was, and is still being done, in the name of religion (man). I can't accept that any true God could condone these actions taken in His name.

I work for AP, and had friends working on a sat dish on a roof within sight of the towers. They told me they saw bodies flying thru the air, and people jumping to certain death to escape being burnt alive. You can never be quite the same again after seeing and hearing things like that.

I was on a motorcycle trip and left early that morning before anything had happened. So I was alone and unaware of anything besides the pleasure of touring.
Stopped for lunch at this little old BBQ place and noticed everone was huddled in front of the kitchen area where there was a TV set on. So, that's when I found out.
I was and remain very proud of my fellow citizens that day...the victims and the heroes spanned the demographics of our country. For the longest time, we were simply Americans, not Italian or Spanish-Americans or whatever but simply Americans.
Let's not forget that.

I was in my office at Falcon Jet here in LIT preparing for a sales meeting, and a co-worker popped his head in and told me a plane had hit a tower. I went down to the lounge and watched with a bunch of other people and s[eculated whether they wold be able to rebuild and occupy the building after the structural damage from the fire. All of a sudden, another plane hit, and news that a third had hit the Pentagon. There was not much of a sales meeting that day, and the gravity of what had happened was just too big for me to digest. It didn't hit me emotionally, until later as I drove home that night and saw all of the flags and church marquees saying 'God Bless Our Nation' and such messages. I realized only then how much that one day would change the world as we knew it, and I started to cry as I drove for what lay before us all.

It was also eery seeing scores of airliners which had been directed to land at the nearest appropriate airport parked on the runway. Lots of folks opened their homes to strangers who had been stranded enroute to their destinations for a few days after that. We were all New Yorkers that day - even here in the South.

I was working nights and was running late for work so I didn't watch the news before I left the house.

I get into work and start getting my kit together to jump on a motor and wonder why everyone is watching a video so early in the afternoon.

Then it became apparent that it wasn't a video.

The one thing I can remember more than what we saw on the news was how different people were that night.

Even in the UK I think it still had an effect. Certainly the people I came across at work all seemed to be slightly subdued and one patient I dealt with who was having quite an obvious myocardial infarction just talked constantly about the days events despite being rather unwell.

I will never forget this atrocity lumbered on USA. It was late night down here and I was blowing ZZZZZ's on the lounge in front of the box, when my then 17 year old son came home from a night on the town, he kicked me and says "hey dad world war 3 just started". my intestines turned inside out and fear went out for all the young adults that would have to suffer, then i was watching the news reports and saw all that was happening in New York, and my thoughts turned to the poor innocents that were involved. Having served 8 years in the New South Wales Fire Brigades, and seeing NYFD getting to work, knowing they were on an impossible task, I just kept feeling sicker and sicker. This event deserves remembrance to honour those who paid the ultimate sacrifice at the hands of evil.

i also remember that day, clearly. i was in my biochemistry lab that day, when hank told me that a plane had hit the tower. i didn't believe him. i got home in time to see the second one hit on tv. i just sat, blank faced, and stared at all the news, films, reports for several days. i will remember that day probably until i die.

i don't agree with the war. but i honor and respect the men and women that fight for us and our country, right or wrong though the reasons may be.

I was watching the news while eating breakfast. Because I worked at keeping up the automated dispatching system for a major utility company, I figured it would be a good idea to grab a portable radio and leave right away to try and catch the next earlier train to downtown. I ran a test program I had written to make sure the dispatch network was up and then manually checked our radio towers. I had the portable radio tuned to an all news station sitting on a table in a conference room where the signal was strongest. On the news they said that city hall, the building we were in and the Library Tower across the street were likely targets. Security announced that the commuter rail line was closed and our building was closed to all incoming people. Of maybe 100 people on our floor, 5 or 6 were there. We talked it over, then called the dpt. manager and were told to leave. The subway was still running so we all left and made our way home as best we could and worked by remote links to make sure the dispatch system stayed up.

Unfortunately, more and more whining chicken s..t traitors have forgotten that event and are sniveling about our continued fight against those crazy evil people.

I was at work in my hangar in Fliegerhorst, Germany. Heard it on the radio in the tech supply office. Minutes later we had the work computers on streaming CNN or BBC, and work stopped cold. After a while the CO held a formation to announce officially what we'd all heard, and released us for the day. Most everybody went back to their house or barracks room, turned on the TV, and started packing their gear like zombies - thinking that maybe tomorrow we'd be going to war, maybe even hoping.

Air travel in Europe was unaffected, and our airfield was right under the glide path for Frankfurt International Airport - for weeks, every few minutes a plane would roar overhead and my blood would chill.

Even Germans were New Yorkers that day...by days end, our front gates were piled high with flowers.

2 years later I was at Ground Zero - while on R&R leave from Iraq.

The image of the second plane crashing into the tower is forever burned into the back of my memory. I just got out of the shower and caught the news about the first plane and sat there stunned and watched the second plane hit. I felt so much remorse for the people who were in the plane and in the buildings I actually started to tear up. Then I got really ****** because I knew terrorists had attacked the United States of America, and being a Veteran I wanted swift and immediate vengance!!! I knew how hard the mission our military was asked to do after it had been budget cut down to the bone by the Clinton administration, and I am glad we are taking the fight to their backyard. I had expected more attacks and I am thankful it has not yet happened.

I am not really interested in anyone's politics, but when I left Iraq in 1991 I knew in my heart that we would be dealing with the islamic world again in the very near future. I did not think it would 10 years. especially after living in Germany for three years where I personally experienced hatred because I was an Amercan.....an American Soldier!

Don't ever let the memory fade from your memory!

The thing is, they are looking at the very teensy picture and are only concerned with how they are being inconvenienced today. The long term hope is that we can get a couple of countries moved into at least the 19th century and they will become places where Shiits, Sunnis, Kurds and whoever else can safely work together without killing each other on sight. If that can happen, it is likely to rub off on their neighbors. Once the various Islamic sects can get along with each other, they are more likely to be able to get along with other people as well and that will be the end of their terrorism.
Why anyone would want to put their personal convenience ahead of that is beyond me. But then, maybe because of growing up during a major war and having to do without a lot because of rationing I missed out on the lessons on petty selfishness.

Washing my Firebird (sold to buy the America) in the drive way. Listening to 98 Rock out of Baltimore, "Kirk, Mark & Lopez (dead)" on teh garage radio. Watched the 2nd tower get hit on TV. We're 30 minutes from Ft. Detrick MD and as a District Manager, had one restaurant outside the main gate. We were advised not to travel, so I kept in touch by phone (no cell those days). My folks working were terrified when it was thought that Ft. Detrick could be a target, so it was a very strange and sickening feeling when the plane went down in PA.

I was in bootcamp, getting our innoculations that day. The instructors came in and asked if anyone was from New York, and they took those guys away, to send home i guess. After that they locked down Great Lakes like a fortress and there was a harder edge to everyones outlook. It felt good when i graduated and went out in town and saw that everyone else in the country was feeling as patriotic as i do.

I was at work just returning from the garage after taking some pictures of the transmission mounts on the current project I was involved in at Ford. When some people were muttering about a plane hitting one of the towers. I originally thought it was probably a small commuter plane as had happened in the past. Made my way to the break room where the TV was on and a large crowd had gathered. Just in time to see the second plane hit. Everyone watched in silent horror all morning as the first tower fell, and then the second. We were all dismissed to go for the day. My most distinct memory after getting home was how stunningly silent it was outside. No traffic noise, no airplanes, ****** even the birds were quiet. It was eerie. It was a beautiful day aside from the ugliness of the world at large. Those images forever seared into my mind. I WILL NEVER FORGET.

I see what you're saying about the concept of "personal inconvenience" during a time of war here Ed, AND I agree with you, BUT...DON'T FORGET...it has blatantly been the policy of this country's government and especially THIS Administration executing the war SINCE 9-11 to "GO SHOPPING" in order to win this war!"

And, NOW that I've said THAT here...5'll get ya 10 friggin' dollars(in order to go shopping, I presume) that this thread in most likelihood WILL be locked...RIGHT, Mr.Moderators???!!!...and besides, it IS September TWELFTH now anyway, huh?!)

I was working nights at the time so I was still in bed when my wife came in and turned on the TV in the bedroom. We were sitting there discussing it and hoping it was a horrible accident or the work of a single maniac when the second plane hit. That was the moment I realized someone had declared war on us. Later, when I heard of the attack on the Pentagon and the crash of flight 93 it was obvious our country had been rocked to its foundations. I was reminded of the comments of Fleet Admiral Yamamoto when he spoke of waking a sleeping giant and filling it with a terrible resolve. I was filled with pride when I heard of the actions of the passengers on flight 93 and I hoped the “United We Stand” signs that popped up everywhere would be true for more than a few months.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

You're wrong there Steve.
I've known Dwight for a while.
He just isn't the type to let someone else's partisan crap go unanswered.

I had just got to work. Walked in to the break room and one of the teamsters says "all He!!'s breaking loose".
I looked at the TV and saw the second plane hit.

No work got done that day.
And management was right there with us watching the news.

Mr. Moderators...PLEASE Tear down this wa...err...excuse me.

PLEASE lock this thread, seeing as how it must be "MY partisan bitterness" that's "somehow" derailed this thread about a rememberence of those murdered on 9/11.

Thank you.

I just wish that sometimes the jokes and rants can be turned off. What the helll is wrong with us?

Mourn folks, tell your stories of where you were and leave the political ranting, and replies to perceived flamings, alone. Should our personal stories overlap with opinions, leave it alone. Let the words of those members who post here speak for themselves.

Here is, after all, part of what yesterdays remembrance was about.

Quote:

On September 11, 2001, terrorists flew two hijacked airplanes into the World Trade Center (WTC) in lower Manhattan in New York City (NYC), destroying both towers of the WTC. This report presents preliminary vital statistics on the deaths caused by the terrorist attacks and describes the procedures developed by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (NYCDOHMH) to issue death certificates in response to the attacks. These data underscore the need for legal mechanisms to expedite the issuance of death certificates in the absence of human remains and the need for vital registration systems that can be relocated in case of emergency.

As of August 16, 2002, a total of 2,726 death certificates related to the WTC attacks had been filed. All but 13 persons died on September 11; of the 13 persons who were injured on September 11 and died subsequently, three persons died in other states, one each in Massachusetts, Missouri, and New Jersey. Of these 2,726 decedents, 2,103 (77%) were males and 623 (23%) were females. The median age for these decedents was 39 years (range: 2--85 years); the median age was 38 years for females (range: 2--81 years) and 39 years for males (range: 3--85 years). Three persons were aged <5 years, and three were aged >80 years. These data represent 97% of the estimated 2,819 WTC deaths; fewer death certificates have been issued than the estimated number of decedents because some families have not yet requested certificates, and investigations into several requests are still in progress.

Of these 2,726 decedents, 1,659 (61%) were non-Hispanic white males, 407 (15%) were non-Hispanic white females, 177 (6%) were Hispanic males, 81 (3%) were Hispanic females, 136 (5%) were non-Hispanic black males, 79 (3%) non-Hispanic black females, 122 (4%) were Asian/Pacific Islander (API) males, and 54 (2%) were API females. A total of 1,837 (67%) had graduated from college or had postgraduate education (males, 69%; females, 63%) (Table 1).

A total of 2,158 (79%) decedents were born in the 50 U.S. states, compared with 59% of the NYC population (1). A total of 568 (21%) decedents were born outside the 50 states, including the United Kingdom (n=56), India (n=36), Puerto Rico (n=34), the Dominican Republic (n=26), and Japan (n=25). By place of residence, as reported on the death certificates, 1,169 (43%) decedents were residents of NYC, 593 (22%) were residents elsewhere in New York (NY) state, and 674 (25%) were residents of New Jersey (Table 2). A total of 27 (1%) were residents of foreign countries. A total of 90 decedents were residents of Massachusetts, the origin of the two airplanes that struck the WTC, and 29 were residents of California, the destination of the flights.

NYCDOHMH processing of death certificates includes assignment of underlying cause-of-death codes. The NYC Office of Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) classified all reported deaths as homicides*. (Death certificates for the 10 terrorists on the two airplanes have not been issued and are not included in these data; these deaths might be classified as suicides.) As of August 22, 2002, OCME had issued 2,734 death certificates, including 1,373 for decedents whose remains had been found and 1,361 for decedents whose remains had not been found; the discrepancy might reflect the later date, and these data might contain some duplications. Methods used to identify decedents included DNA (645), dental radiographs (188), fingerprints (71), personal effects (19), and photographs (16). Multiple methods were used to identify 407 decedents, and 966 were identified by a single method (Shiya Ribowsky, OCME, personal communication, 2002). Death certificates listed the cause of death as "physical injuries (body not found)" for decedents whose remains were not found and were specific when remains were found (e.g., "blunt trauma to head, trunk, and extremities").

This is part of what shaped our world 7 years and one day ago and what continues to shape it today. Seems like no one wants to admit what happened anymore. To those that can't take it, please do not watch the below video.

I repeat kidhaf's sentiments,

"Peace & Respect to all those who lost loved ones.
Peace & Respect to all those who gave to help.
Peace & Respect to those who never made it home from work.
Peace & Respect to all my brothers on this site. "

I am asking nicely,

Please let what was written earlier pass. Take it to PM's if you feel the need to go off topic. Leave this thread to those that want to tell us where they were and what they felt. However that may offend. Let those that can, write their feelings and say what must be said. However wrong, however right.

The off topic post, rebuttal in nature, end now. Let us not have any post within this thread that say "POST DELETED".

When the second jetliner stuck the second tower, I wept. With news of the plane striking the Pentagon I was at the lowest low I had ever been. When the news started about the heroic actions of those aboard United Airlines Flight 93, I got down on my knees and prayed. Forever I will remember the words of Todd Beamer. I thought would I be that brave? Would I have done what he and others did? Could I have saved lives like they did? I'll never know but I thank the lord above for those heroic actions taken aboard United Airlines Flight 93.

Quote:

When he had finished talking with Lisa Jefferson, finished relaying his love for his family, finished praying the Psalm that asked for green pastures and still waters, Todd Beamer put down the phone, still connected with the outside world.
"Are you guys ready? Let's roll," he said.
