Ok, I bought a 2004 Speedmaster and I LOVE IT!
But it is my first bike, so I am not to sure of what I need to do to keep it running good. I know the chain is supposed to be lubed every 200 miles, but what kind of lube? What is the best way? What about chain tension?? I have been brosing this site for months before I bought my bike, however it seems like there is an overload of information. Anyone have a site, or know of one that can help a novice keep his bike on the raod and out of the shop??

Thanks everyone
Wendell

PS This site ROCKS!

Wendell,
Welcome. Maintaining the Triumph won't be all that difficult. The basic owner's manual stuff and Don's link will be about all you'll need to keep it going and be comfortable doing so. However, the real problem will be in prying your arse from the seat to do all the things you need to do - whether they involve the bike or other normal routine - Somehow, one can just get stuck to the seat and never want to get off. ENJOY!

I'd say since it's new, start simple with the chain, learn to do that, then pick something new, move on, etc. Pat's web page has a bunch of info on mods too, as well as matt's web page.

There is no question there is an overload of information here. I would also suggest reading through the operators manual (it has chain tension and may have lube info) and if you have basic mechanical skills order a service manual. Then keep an eye out in here for the tricks of the trade and options on oils, filters, mods, etc. I hope you got the red Speedmaster. They are faster.

Like Grump said. Read all that. But here is what I do for lubing my chain.

The rear wheel must be off the ground in neutral. Having a lift is easier. Otherwise you gotta roll and lube.

Kerosene clean and lube every 500 miles. A chain brush is the best for use with the kerosene. Put some kero in a jar, dip and brush against chain as you turn the wheel. Dip and clean bruh every couple of turns. Wipe kero from chain with cloth or paper towel and dont get it on brakes.

Apply very little "Chain Lube" spray as you turn the wheel. Wipe it clean with paper towel. If you can, make sure you have garage door open or do it outside. This stuff stinks.

Best time to do this is after a ride when chain gunk is stil warm or after a 5 minute ride around the block.

bel ray super clean chain lube is the best. the chain should be adjusted to 1.25 inch play, i believe. better to be loose than too tight. after a couple thousand miles, my chain needed little adjustment.
