OK... We have 2 dogs, 100 lb. black lab and a 75 lb. Chesapeake. I was consulted on the lab and totally left our of getting the second dog. They are both great dogs, and I appreciate having them being part of the family. But... the agreement was that the rest of the family would do the yard cleanup... I clean the house, mow the yard, do windows, cook, vehicle maintenance... you name it and I do it, but I DON"T DO DOG CRAP! I hate the smell, I hate the flies, I REALLY hate stepping in it! Especially after I just cleaned and mopped the floor and it gets tracked in within an hour!

When I complain I get the look and attitude "If ya don't like it do something about it yourself"

Could someone explain it to me where I am out of line in my stand?

thanks...
later, Tom.

But, what do I know?

just recently I had to put a sign on my fence that said "I don't leave dog poop in your yard, please stop leaving it in mine". I had to do this because everyday when I was getting up and leaving for work, there was a new steaming pile of dog squirt. Some a55 had chosen my yard as the place to stop off everyday and let their precious little cuddle-bug pinch one off. If I had seen who it was, they'd would have been wearing it home as a lesson.

If you own a dog, and it poops while you are walking, pick it up, and throw it away. It is just common courtesy.

Panman, same deal with me, regarding duties. We've got 5 but at least my wife keeps her end of the bargain.

Maybe threaten to find the dogs new homes??

just do not do any of your things to do around the house... just stop, do not mow clean etc... and when asked when you are going to do all those things very politely respond "when you people clean those piles of dog squeeze as we had agreed" it works.

I do all of the yard work and car maintenance, help with dishes etc, whatever I can do to help, after my first kid was born my wife stopped helping me with yard work... its a lot of work and recently I just had it... I stopped cleaning up the fence from kudzu and weeds... when it became too horrendous my wife grabbed the gloves and the weed whacker... took her like 4-6 hrs to finish. I think she got the message; I said thank you and gave her a massage at night

The late and brilliant George Carlin suggested feeding your dog colored rubber bands...that way when they've done their business, you can grab a loop of rubber band sticking out, and slingshot the poop over the fence into the neighbor's yard

A pitching wedge works well too.

We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

It's also bad when you're mowing the lawn and one of the wheels rolls into a dog mine and sticks to it like a big ol' poopy thing. All you can do is watch it go round and round while the fragrant stench is intermingled with the sweet smell of new mown grass.

You have family members like mine. They want a dog, but that's it. No feeding, cleaning up after, nothing. You'll have to suck it up and get in a routine of "hosing it in" every day early in the morning or after work. You blast it into the grass with a hose nozzle. May take a while to get the technique right. At first, you may splash particles up into your eyes, mouth, and on your clothing, but be patient, you'll get it right eventually.

I had a neighbor with a big dog. Used to walk dog and since he lived about 900 feet away by the time he got to my lawn it was that time.

Again and again I would find this steaming pile of feces on my lawn and after a while I got tired of this. So I kept my eyes open and found who the culprit was.

I caught the teenager walking his dog near my property and asked him to remove what his dog was about to do. He ignored me and left a new steaming pile of poo. I kept my eyes on him to see where he resided.

The next morning, Sunday at 0900 I visited his house. With a bag of Saturday's poo in my hand I waited until the door opened. Mr. Homeowner came to the door and I told him what had transpired and dumped the poo on his threshold and informed him that this would continue until he found a new route for his son to take with his dog.

End of discussion and end of problem.

I don't do doo, so we train ours to use the "zone" way out back. About a 100 sq. ft. area that we just don't use!!! 30 minutes after feeding, put 'em on the leash and head out to the zone. Only takes about 3 weeks to get them in the habit. We did it with our Cairn, the Keeshond and the Lab. My burn pit is there and an occasional shovelful of ash takes care of any lingering problems that the sprinkler system doesn't.

Save your bacon grease, warm it up in the microwave and wander through your yard and pour it over said feces.
By the next morning it mysteriously disappears.

Just don't let the dogs lick your face.

As long as I knew who the culprit was, I used to pick it up in a plastic bag double wrap it, put it in a box and send it UPS with a note stating. "I believe you left this on my property, just being neighbourly and returning it to you"

This, an empty 5 gallon bucket and ten minutes in the yard takes care of our two critters waste. Both daughters were "supposed to do it" but that never really happened. now it's just the wife, myself and two pooping machines....

Simple solution to the "if you don't like it do something about it" thing is to do exactly that - get rid of the dogs. For the sake of on-going family relations, it might be politically correct to first warn family members of the dogs' impending doom if the dog mines aren't dealt with.

Hats off to whomever gave the bacon grease suggestion!

On a more serious note: I have found that a diet of food concentrated with lamb and rice significantly reduces quantity, frequency and provides a more 'workably firm' 'end' product. This worked best for me http://www.nutroproducts.com/ncdry-lr.shtml

On an even more serious note: Parasites common to dogs thrive in the digestive system. Eggs pass through the digestive system and will live in soil for extended periods of time. The 'hose' method may contribute to the sreading of parasitic critters and could lead to the spread of said critters. Doing so may place you, your family, and uninfected pets in line for a good ol' medically induced colon cleansing (i.e., de-worming).

In short: Reduce the frequency, size and improve 'consistancy' for minimized easier clean-up. Harvest it 'fresh', before the eggs and larvea migrate to the soil, and save the hose for washing the dog.

Good luck with the pets.

( The best dog I ever had is a Golden named 'Tasha'. She lived for 17 years and was fantastic. She's been buryed in the back yard for nearly six years and these last six have been better yet!!! TO YOU OLD GIRL )

Sorry Tom, I know how you feel, but it's a case of "Love my dog, love my dog's crap!" It's a package deal here, dude.

And seein' as how the little "gifts" your dogs leave in your back yard is a natural phenomenon, why would you take it out on them and threaten to send them away if it's the "other family members" who aren't pullin' their weight in this regard.

MY suggestion...tell those "other family members" that IF they DON'T start helpin' out their dad, AND those two other four-legged "family members", THEN they're NOT going to do a D*MN THING ELSE, such as video games, goin' to Chuckie Cheese, oh, I don't know, maybe even leaving the house to go to little Mikey's down the street, UNTIL they DO do the doo-doo boogie!!!

AND...you HAVE to MEAN IT!!!

(and DANG IT!!! If only I were fat, bald, spoke with a folksy Texan accent and knew Oprah, I could be rich beyond belief by dispensing these common sense solutions to these everyday problems TOO!!!)

I kind of agree with "Dr. Dwight". From our 4 legged friends we get unconditional love, affection, companionship, and protection from bad people coming in the house (at least if the dogs are big). Part of the deal is we have to pick up their poo poo and feed them. It's not a bad trade off if you ask me.

My dad was arrested for throwing doggie crap on repeat offender doggie owner who ignored dad's pleas to stop it. This was back in the sixties when nobody gave a crap, so to speak, about where doggies crapped. Dad lost in court because offender was a retired city cop. Dad was fined, but no more doggie crap. Retired ignorant cop died soon after. Justice served...

for those with "neighbors" who walk their dogs in order to let them crap on other people's yards:

Check your local ordinances.
In Las Vegas, it's a misdemeanor.
And it's enforced.
Get video evidence or several witnesses.
They will cite the offender.

Panman,
Don't cook, don't clean, don't mow, don't do windows until the others keep up their end.

Unless, of course, it's that good and/or you're that whipped.
In that case, suck it up and do what you're told.

No dogs, no problems. I went there some years ago with the pool. "We'll all help with testing, cleaning, upkeep, ect.". That never happened, so I knew what wouldn't happen with animals. Plus, we're gone a lot, so the dogs would be alone too much.

Well, it is good, but I'm not whipped! (Unless I ask for it!)

Nope, I can't get rid of the dogs, coz I love em too! The info about the parasites seems to count for something in the short term... we'll see how long it lasts.

I hear ya Dwight, but my boys are both over 21 and bigger than me, so I'd have to pack a lunch if I wanna pick a fight with them. The Chuckey Cheese holds no weight any longer! (At least they had beer there, which made it a great place to have a date with the wife AND entertain the kids many moons ago)

I did start off with the so all ya'all would know I'm just frustrated and venting, to which I thank all. Sometimes it is better to sound off in a semi-annonomous forum than take it out on the family.

It may be that being out of work for over 3 months, going on a limited carb diet, stopping drinking and other substances, has had it's affect on me...

So thanks all for allowing my whine, and knowing from your replies I'm justified in my feelings on this point!

I know it's been said before, but this place ROCKS

later, Tom.

But, what do I know?

that would have an effect on anyone!
I was going to suggest one of the higher protein dog foods the vets or pet stores sell. the better the food, the less they eat, the less they ******, and it does not smell as much.
However.... with pups that big, they are going to ****** a lot no matter what.
Here's hoping you get a job soon, I know what being out of work's like. Totally sucks.
Good luck,

Okay, okay! So they're too big for Chuckie Cheese nowdays, huh Tom?!

Ah HA!!!

Well, in THAT case here's what ya do then:

Stand in front of the door with a tire iron and tell those two big lugs that they ain't goin' to ANY strip club until that yard o' yours is spotless!!!

(and BTW...like Mary said...good luck with the job search, my friend)
