I sold Yamaha and want to buy a Bonnie America, still not many good deals here in southern Wisconsin. I did find an '04 Speedmaster with just under 8,000 miles that I can get for around $4600.00. The owner is an over the road truck driver, I'm told it runs great but has sat for around 2 years. This concerns me. Should it? What can I reasonably expect to have to spend on it to correct any problems? How easily are problems to detected ? Outside of the obvious such as tires etc... Thanks!

8,000 miles is nothing and if it has been stored in a dry place the 2 years shouldn't concern you as long as it runs now and wasn't parked due to a problem. My 04 Speedmaster has almost 20,000 trouble free miles on it. They are easy to work on too.

That is not a bad deal. Change the oil. Maybe recharge the battery. If there is any fuel in the tank, dump it and add fresh gas and you should be down the road.

Take off the fuel tank, flush it out good. Remove the petcock to empty it. There is a screen in the T fitting at the far end of the gas hose from the tank that should be cleaned. Evaporating gas leaves behind a residue that will clog things up if not cleared out.
Just to be safe, dribble a little penetrating oil down the sparkplug holes and let it sit for a day or two to free up the rings in case it's needed.
Change the fluids just to be safe.

Sounds like a good deal and, with a little "running readiness" work it should be a good bike for you.

You might ask the guy if he used stabilizer or not. Seems to me he may have due to knowing he wasn't riding it much and the nature of his bees nest. (a double dose of stabilizer last for two years.)

If the sickle is local, go over (+1 greybeard) and put about 4ccs of oil in each cylinder, drain the carb bowls and let some tank fuel pass through to observe both the colour, smell and trash/water if any appears in the collection vassal. Take the battery out and bring it home to charge it up.

Now, based on what the gas looks like, go back the next day with some gas and spark plugs, then either drain all the fuel or not. Look for a nest in the airbox. Hook up the charged batry and see if she'll start.

If you decide to purchase expect to spend round abouts of $450 bucks to correct any problems. New skins $300 + oil change out $50 + rear brake pads $30 + sundry $70.

Sundry: NGK DPR8EA-9 spark plugs, brake fluid, wax, condoms, beer.

Alternatively, in a 'either or' scenario, go over with a hot batry and a clean supply of gas, drain each bowl, decide whether gas is bad or not, take a gander at the air cleaner, then try to fire her up. You are relying on his representations.

Bring a tire pressure gauge with you as well.

Good luck! Sounds like a sound deal to me.
