this isn't as much a forum issue but it is if I can't use my pc due to adware/malware as they call it. I had one attack my pc while it was idle and it took over, removed display controls from the desktop after changing the background to tell me to buy a system cleaner. I can not e-mail and these pop ups constantly nag me about all my viruses. Anyway my son says norton antivirus slows the computers down too much if they don't incapacitate them at times. Any suggestions on a decent antivirus out there? I used norton for years but he says that now adays it is incapacitating to most pc's. opinions?

I had avast recommended to me by a couple of members of this site when I was having PC problems. It's free and I haven't had any problems since.

Your son is right about Norton, somtimes its like a virus itself.

I use Norton and also use adaware and spybot, never seem to have any problems, except for the otherday when I got a Trojan sent to me via email and Norton did not pick it up even though it is updated regular..

I ended up having something else as well called Antivirus XP, which runs a scan and tries to make you buy it. If you do not it stops you using your PC or tries..

Try here for all your antivirus needs. In fact, that site will give you 99% of all the software you'll ever need. I don't think I paid for anything on my PC, with the exception of games and the OS.

For security, I've used all the main ones on there (AVG, Avast, Avira, AdAware, Spybot, SpywareBlaster, ZoneAlarm, Trend, etc, etc, etc.) Personally, I think they all do a similar job with similar results and, as such, I'm currently using Avast and A-squared free, purely due to their simple interfaces. Your mileage may vary, of course but there's nothing to stop you downloading them all and seeing which one/s you're comfortable with.

I've used AVG for a number of years now.
I used to swear by Mcafee but then they changed the product.
In their effort to protect me from viruses they kept me from being able to do anything on my PC. It ran like a dog.
Uninstalled and put on AVG free... had it ever since.
New version of AVG is very good too.

Ray, that is what I have. Antivirus xp 2008. My son is still in there trying, it resists the antiviruses by not letting them run.

Norton has gotten to be a pain but I still use it. I have been considering something else but not sure what yet. I have used AVG on the kids puters and it seems to work.

I had the same problem, I was steered to counterspy.com I did the 15 day free trial and it seemed to work well so I purchased the home license version and it has worked very well for me.

you may consider changing your internet browser to firefox 3 as well. it comes defaulted so it won't go to sites that have been reported as malicious. that will reduce the attacks.

same thing happened to me. here's how i fixed it
click on start and scroll to "all programs" then scroll to
"accessories" next scroll to "system tools" then scroll to
"system restore" then click on "restore my computer to an earlier time" pick a date before you had the problem and restore to that date and all the persistent junk will be gone.

if life gives you lemons keep them because hey, free lemons.

ff3 is a pretty safe internet browser, but it won't clean an infected system, because it isn't an antivirus program itself. it's just a little smarter than internet explorer, at least for now.

my vote goes for AVG, for a decent free antivirus program. throw in spybot and that should help as well. you can find both of them at filehippo.com

quote but it won't clean an infected system, knew that, just working on some preventative medicine. Thanks for the link to file hippo.

Well I went to file hippo and downloaded AVG and MBAM and it is gone. I got my e-mail back and desktop settings and the wife is now happy. Thanks for all the suggestions, I book marked them all for future needs.

glad to hear it! i've had to go through an entire 'boot and nuke' before, so i'm glad you didn't have to go through that whole thing. it can be tedious, and can cost you everything you have digitized and wanted to keep.

Just thought I'd add an update:

I've got rid of A-squared and now use Spyware Terminator Unlike A2, it provides realtime protection.

It's not a protection program but Glary Utilites is a cracking little program for keeping your PC tidy. Loads of neat little tools to mess about with, or just use the "1-click" function to tidy the main areas.

I had a similar issue; AVG & (more importantly) MBAM solved it.

I am not an expert but have been told that CA Internet Security is among the top 3 now and if you have proof you bought any other AV program it's free after rebate from Tiger Direct until the end of the year.
