When riding into an area you don't know well, fill the tank at every chance, as the next chance may be a little too far.
If you do find yourself low on fuel, try to keep your speed down to where you get decent economy. Use as high a gear as is practical, the fewer times per mile the engine turns, the less fuel/air is pumped through it.
When low on fuel, stay to the side of the road except to pass when you come up behind very slow traffic that would make you use a lower gear if you followed. Along with making it easier to pull off the road if you run out of fuel, you will have an easier time accessing an unexpected place to fill up.

The strategies of riding in New Mexico. I think there may be one "Next gas XX miles" sign in the whole state. It is a running joke with my friends that I'm looking for a gas station after just 50 miles after a fill up, but better safe than sorry.

Good advice and hopefully I won't have to experience pushing my empty bike.

You should put this in the newbie thread

My riding buddy has a Gold Wing and he is always sighing and shaking his head when I start pointing to my gas cap. Thing is he is getting 39 mpg and I'm getting 50.

I get the same thing from a friend with an ST1100... we just tell him he's riding a gas tanker. At one stage his son was coming on rides with us on his 250cc something-or-other and we suggested that with a big scoop on the 250's air inlet and leaving the ST1100's choke on, the son could ride behind his dad and not use any of his own fuel. :P

I just rode through NM last month, comming up through Lovington. As bad as it was it was nothing compared to Montana, I rode for over an hour (praying the whole time) before I came to six road town (only one road was paved).

There is one such sign. Unfortunately, the gas station it refers to closed in 1958.

Someone needs to invent an 'in-flight' re fueling method for those Hondas so they could share the wealth with us less fortunate riders.

They have a fuel pump even on the carburetted versions because of the awkward location of the tank, so it wouldn't be hard to do.

That's not correct. Fuel/air volume is determined by both throttle position and motor speed. For this and other reasons, best mileage does not occur at minimum RPM.

The less air/fuel pumped through the engine per mile, the more miles per gallon. A low manifold pressure (higher vacuum) means less fuel per revolution but, fewer revolutions per mile at the same manifold pressure also means less fuel per mile.
This is why Corvettes and Vipers (among others) are geared far beyond their power curve. The new 'Vettes will actually go faster in 5th gear than 6th because they are over geared in the interest of better fuel economy.

Chrysler had this figured out back in the days of the Mobil Oil annual economy runs. They would start off quicker than competing drivers who were going strictly by manifold pressure, even spinning their wheels occasionally, in order to get to top gear as quickly as practical.

No it's not. I took a highway from Helena southbound. I did not see a gas station for over 150 miles. When I finally got to a gas station it had kind of fuel, was unmanned, had a DIRT PARKING LOT and was in town with only one paved road (The highway).

When I was in OZ, I was talking to a bloke who said he had a sidecar fitted with a 30 gallon tank for trips across the outback. At times, he even worried if that was enough.
