Went to a couple leather shops looking for chaps, and all they could provide were the buffalo, stiched together, thin go to a costume party and look like a biker type crap. Was looking at fox creek leather on the internet, they looked good. You guys have any other sugestions?

http://artscowparts.com/ in New Hampshire. Really thick well crafted chaps. Super strong zippers. I wear their jacket as well.
http://langlitz.com/products.shtml is another option. Very expensive, but outstanding quality. They'll send you a catalogue and price list. be certain you are sitting down when you read the price list.
Hope you find what you are looking for.

Hey Mert,
Thanks for the links. I was wondering where you got the jacket when I saw it in your pic. Nice.

I can second (Mert's) nod towards Langlitz Leathers. I got a Columbia jacket last winter. It's just plain excellent, but the $$, ouch! Given a choice, I would look at pants over chaps to save butt cheek grafts. Maybe this coming winter?

Uh Oh; I can sense FriarJohn about to ship this post off to rider gear cyberland.

Sorry, I did post in the wrong section. I've got the leather pants for really cold all day rideing, but I want something easier to get into and out of when rideing to work. Changeing in the bathrooms is a real pita.

Though I haven't bought anything from them (yet), I'd sure give the FOX CREEK LEATHER folks a shot. No doubt, there is nothing to lose, as they seem to be spot on with customer satisfaction by all accounts.

I don't know how chaps could vary much from one to another - maybe they do. At least FCL's prices are reasonable, and the quality seems to be top notch.

These guys make really good leather stuff and they stand behind it. http://www.purplehogleathers.com/
I had the zipper go some 10 years after I bought a jacket from them, and they replaced it free. The jacket has now had well over 20 years of serious use and it's still in good shape.

I called Fox Creek Leathers today about one of their jackets. Talked to a very nice person. Bottom line is they're sending a jacket my way to try on for sizing! Talk about great customer service. After I try it one I'll be able to measure to have a custom made jacket crafted. Can't wait.

I'm sure this is a dumb question but why are chaps shaped the way they are?

Never could understand the concept on a motorcycle. In many cases (not all) the back of your legs and A$$ are un-protected. Galloping through the brush on a horse for thigh protection makes sense I guess. Here you go:

Chaps

You may want to consider real protection:

Draggin jeans

I have two pair of Draggin Jeans and they are great. One pair is 3 years old and still in fantastic shape. If you didn't know, you'd swear they were regular jeans...

Got my chaps from Fox Creek a week ago. Great fit and quality throughout. Large zippers, and a single piece of cow hide on the front of the legs. The leather is much thicker than any of the ones I saw at any of my local shops, and is much softer than the ones I purchased at the Hanford run many years ago. These fit much better then my old ones, I never knew leather could shrink so much over the years!!! I have leather pants, and the Triumph armored pants for the colder long rides, but needed something I could slip on and off for work. These fit my needs, and I am very pleased with them.

Really neat idea they have with the chaps. I have a duster that buttons up the legs to make protection from the rain. These started out as oiled cotton, but now are mostly just cotton. I don't know if there is a way to oil it up again, it went from black to a gray in about 7 years. Its actually held up pretty good, considering all the flapping it does while rideing. Looks really cool. Its good for a short ride in the rain, but it will never replace a good electric vest and rain suit.

Wanna rejuvinate the old canvas coat? Check dis out:

http://www.filson.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2092385&cp=2069836.2065003.2075108

Good schtuff. I swear by Filsons products. A little pricy, but built to last. I've used their oil treatment to re-waterproof an old canvas rainhat (not Filsons brand) and it works quite well.

Thanks for that site, Jaeger. I'm going to order some. I'll let you guys know how it works out. It would really be nice to have a water proof duster again without haveing to buy new.

Phil,

Are those draggin jeans hotter to wear than regular jeans down here in S. FL?

I wear them riding all the time and they don't feel any hotter than regular jeans.

Ditto. I wear the Draggin' cargo pants. I like the large side pockets.

Aw Benny, can't you see the W650? It's a kawi....

btw, this pic pretty well shows where the Kevlar is. Note the stitching in the knee and just below the rear pocket. Your knees and butt are where the protection is...

I'm so ashamed!!

A friend of mine has them. Look fine, just that extra stitching. I'm gonna get some for next year, I was all set to get a few different pait, one fleece lined, one cargo, one regular, then I saw the 99 price tag!! Maybe just one at a time There's also a dealer kiiiinda near me, so maybe trying some on would be a good idea.

Benny, if you have a chance to try 'em on do it. I bought mine off the internet and I really like them a lot, but I bought the regular style with the knee armor and the legs are really tight around my calves when the armor is in. Consequently, I don't wear the armor as much as I probably should.
