My Great Uncle Roy was a fighter pilot in WWII who was shot down and killed in 1944. I'd heard his name mentioned in passing from my Grandfather, but up until last week I'd never seen a picture of him. At the family reunion I attended in California recently, one of my Grandfather's other brothers, Harry, brought a picture of my Uncle Roy standing in front of the P-47 he flew. My Great Uncle Harry was also a WWII pilot, trained to fly a B-17, but that was late in the war and he never saw any action. So I gave Harry my info and asked him to send me a scan of the pic of Roy.

I've always wanted to find out more about Roy, and when the American Legion I belong to had plaques you could buy to raise funds that would be embedded into the tables in the new building they're putting up, I had the idea of dedicating one to my Great Uncle Roy. It's great to finally be able to put a face with the name, and it'll be an honor to have his name proudly displayed at my local Legion.

It's not a good scan, but my Great Uncle Harry is 90 and I'm just grateful I could get any copy of the pic I saw last week.

Here's my Great Uncle Harry in front of a B-17.

I'd say he's doing pretty well for 90! Simple fact that he even knows what a scanner is... We don't get to hear to many stories of those days first hand anymore, it's great that you get to help carry that on. My grandfather flew in the pacific in WWII, but got to come home to plan on some officers softball team! How's that for random? I wish I knew more details, but I don't.
Great pics!

Derek,

I have an Uncle who flew a B-26 out of England during WWII. He passed on March 2007. FYI, I was able to locate some squadron information via internet sites which I shared with my aunt and mother. I have Army Air Corps decals on the BA in his honor & memory.

Good for you

Great pictures Derek.
The veterans of WWII are leaving us by the hundreds each month, as are their stories. Pictures like these will keep the memories alive.
