Finally had some time to get my facts straight on an idle problem I've been having and need some opinions.

Lets start with the revs above 3,000 RPM. Release the throttle, and it idles at 1,200 RPM, a bit quick but smooth. If you blip the throttle smooth acceleration.

If you leave the throttle alone, after about 20 to 30 seconds the idle drops to 1,000RPM and its not really what I would call a smooth idle. Almost on the edge of stalling. If you blip the throttle, there is quick flat spot (almost stalling), sometimes a backfire, then normal accel. Upon release of the throttle, back to 1,200 RPM and the process starts over (i.e. after 30 sec, down to 1,000 and running rough.

I have Thunderbird pipes and 45 pilots (the pilots on the recommendation of a local Triumph mechanic).

Before I start playing with the carbs and perhaps going back to 42 pilots, would appreciate any suggestions as to what might be causing this problem

What do you have your idle needles turned to. Try turning them in a bit. It sound like you are running rich on the idle circuit.

Mine acts similar but I put up with it because if I lean out my screws to get the best idle, I end up with some popping on deceleration. If I richen em up a bit the idle suffers after 15 to 20 seconds.

Gregger is correct, the pilots are too rich. How many turns out are they now?

Thanks guys, don't recall how many turns but I'll check it out and let you know in a few days. (On some business travel so not near the bike).

Must admit, I don't get too much popping on decel and my mileage isn't great so I probably am a bit rich.

It's an off chance, but that can be caused by a vacuum leak.
