The importing was a complete breeze!
Step 1) Buy bike...
Step 2) Have the title (with VIN number) faxed to the US border office where you'll be crossing 72 hours before you get there, they need to do a lien and stolen search on the VIN. The US customs official will go with you out to your bike and verify the VIN is the same that is on the title, and will stamp your title with the date etc.
Step 3) Report to Canadian Border office and have ALL your paperwork there, I had the title, bill of sale, printed off EBAY auction etc. Once there you will fill in the RIV paperwork which is only about 12 lines to fill in, the Customs officer will then go over the form with you to ensure it is correct and will advise how much GST you will have to pay at the cashier. Pay the GST and return to the customs officer and he will then stamp your 'Form 1' RIV papers. The customs official will punch your bike in to the computer, and in my case he said that it didn't come up with the flag for duty, so that saved me some cash.
Step 4) Once you arrive home, go to
www.riv.ca and pay your $204.75 online and fax them a 'Recall Clearance Letter'. If you call Triumph US and talk to Peter C. he will fax you a request form to fill out with VIN and Engine # to send you a clear letter back. RIV will then email you the 'Form 2' to enable you to get the federal inspection, remember to take your stamped 'Form 1' with you (free with your RIV fee you paid and can be done at any Canadian Tire location).
Step 5) Register your bike however you would wherever you live.
Step 6) Enjoy, Enjoy, Enjoy.
It might sound like a pain in the ****** process, but so far for me it's been very easy. I'll be taking my bike to Canadian Tire on Monday for the fed inspection, then hopefully immediately to a Bike shop for my provincial safety, then straight to my insurance guy to start riding!
