I am going to Renton (near Seattle) today for work on my regular bi-weekly trip. The weather is going to be good, so I am going to ride. After today, over the last couple of weeks that'll be about 1500 miles or so I will have logged on the bike for work miles, all on company time.

Who else travels for work? Do you get to ride?

I do, I do...dont know how many miles I put on for work. I go somewhere different every day and as long as conditions (no rain, no conference call and no parts to carry) I love riding for/to work.

I do, but for work it is all day trips and rarely more than 80 miles from home.

Thom I might be wrong, I sometimes am.

Not on a regular basis, but when I do get to rotate stations for a shift or two, it is usually to the station that is 38 miles away from home, as opposed to my normal 20 miles, so I get a pretty decent communte on those days, (mostly through the woods ) I ride to work on any day that it's not pouring rain when I get up in the morning. To top it off, I get mileage since that is not the station I am assigned to.

I work a one a week on, one week off schedule. Seven 12 hour shifts to make 84 hours for the week on. My week on is 167.5 miles away from the house, so I rent a room. I also spend 3 months a year in the middle east. So, I'm with the family and bike 5.5 months a year (includes vacation).

I bring a week's worth of provisions (clothes, left-overs, etc.,) with me in the truck, so I don't ride to my work locale. I'm surprised I've put as many miles as I have on the bike with this schedule (13K/2005).

Needles to say, wife and family are very understanding. They're used to the separation as I'm also retired military.

I'm on vacation now, so you know I'm riding everyday!

Regards,

Tom

35 miles from Hiram to HJAIA (Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport)...that's 70 round trip..I really don't like putting the miles on Frog (1100 now since the valve adjustment train wreck)..But to hear that exhaust off the divider wall on I-20 at 75 mph is SWEET...I alternate between my bike, Kimmy's bike, and the Altima..Traffic is simply murder on Thursdays and Fridays here in the ATL...

With my traveling for work on company time, since I get paid by the hour (plus getting to expense mileage), does that make me a part time professional motorcycle rider?

I don't actually have an office... I have a company car and a laptop. Thing is I also have a trunk full of parts and a heavy toolbox! So I wish I could ride to work, but I really can't... Luckily I can also usually kinda squeek out a little early on a nice day and get some riding in when I get home

Heard a story from a Captain yesterday...friend of his got a special assignment to the Army recruiting command - to travel around the country with the Army Chopper. So his whole job, along with two SGTs, is to tool around the country going to bike rallys all the time, to display (and ride) the Army bike. Oh and the three of them get to take their own bikes along too so they can ride at the rallys.
Gee wouldn't that job suck?

I've been looking at the possibilities of a morning paper route via motorcycle. (If only they'd call me back...)
I'm usually wide awake at 3 am anyway, love to ride, and need a job, so...

I obviously wouldn't be the first to do so

[cool shades!]

Anyhow, I've been wondering how to go about deducting work mileage for tax purposes, to see if the gig makes financial sense.

On of the forms you can fill out at tax time is for mileage. You get to claim any mileage for work that your employeer has not already reimbursed you for (which means they claimed the deduction) and is not regular commuting miles. The big secret is to keep somekind of daily mileage log. In that log you need to list your starting mileage, ending miles, total miles, starting location, ending location and business purpose (nothing fancy - just list something simple like "Onsite Service Call", "Customer Visits", "Supply Run" or whatever).
