If GM doesn't get it's act together they are on a death watch for heading to bankruptcy for probably the most massive Chapter 11 in history. I can't begin to think of the ripple effect that would bring on the economy.

Maybe they should start making V8 motorcycles.... or better yet a radial engine motorcycle like this:

They've been close before but, this time, they don't have Durant or Walter Chrysler to save them. Unfortunately, their current business major management hasn't the sense to call on an engineer to straighten things out.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for the US auto industry.
The way has been paved - quality and reliability will win over the masses.
Does anyone buy a Camry because of it's looks? Few, I would imagine.
I do realize their pension loads are massive, but that doesn't explain it all.
They've failed to deliver.

speaking of the ripple effect, the local gm truck plant is down to one shift and will close in less than 2 years. The suppler companies that are also local have laid off their non essential workers too and so on. it doesn't look good here but they don't seem to have any fuel efficient vehicles,(should be a bunch) planned for any of these plants that are closing either.

g.m.'s legacy is positivey what's killing them. i got a z-71 last year,,great truck,,, but,, 25% of the sale price goes into their legacy. does the old saying "painting yourself into a corner" still any validity?????

It would take almost two years to re-tool the truck plants, and the next agreement with the Union is 18 months away. They don't have that much time!

They can crash and burn for all I care. They loved NAFTA and built 48 plants in Mexico leaving our workers broke and helpless. They built junk while Toyota and Honda built well. They built out of the country while Toyota used U.S. workers and made money. They pay themselves huge bonuses when they are in the red. They build SUVs!!!!! HELLO!!!!! Does nobody watch trends??
They deserve all the bad things that happen to bad management.
Hmmmm, Hey Mr. Bloor, I am thinking of you now too.

there are a whole list of reasons the American auto builders are in the trouble they are in, the unions, the government, the enviromentilist, the lack of foresite, design and engineering, and those greedy b-tards at the top looking only for the $$$. here where i live Mr. Roger Smith the x ceo of g.m.( you know, the one that michael moore was looking for) has a house (hahahahahaha can i say mansion), on the beach, he purchased the house next door for 8million and proceeded to tear it down and put exotic fish ponds in where the house was, it wasnt long and he realized the birds were eating his exotic fish so, he ripped them out and put tennis courts in their place. NOW, this is the man who was in charge at G.M and he has 8 and a half million bucks rapped up in tennis courts. can you tell me now why they are in trouble????
ENJOY!!!!! NEWT!!!!!

you can thank unions for the 8 hour work day, the 40 hour week and be thankful that your kids are not working at 10 years old because of unions. I consider myself to be lucky to be in a union that looks after my best interests, and I know that when I retire I will receive a pension because it was actually set aside, and not just promised to me by some corporate slob in a suit who took the money and ran. Greedy corporate pricks are the reason they go bankrupt, anything less than 100% profit is a loss in their minds. Dammit, now I have to go to bed pisst off

I always been amazed at how much labor unions give themselves credit for. I’m expecting them to say they wrote the Bill Of Rights and the Mayflower Compact, that they invented the wheel, fire and rock and roll. I’m sure, considering their record, they were behind Lindberg’s flight, Paul Revere’s ride and the voyages of Columbus. To hear them tell it, without unions the US would be a giant sweat shop looking back fondly to the days when Dickens wrote of a relative Eden. My brother is a big union guy and hates it when I ask him to back up his claims with a little fact. They’ve built up a myth that they’ve repeated so many times they’ve come to believe it.
We all like to think of ourselves as rugged individualists. But when push comes to shove most of us are sheep who do what we are told. Worst of all, a lot of us become unpaid agents of whoever is controlling the agenda by enforcing the current dogma on the few rugged individualists who actually exist.

Well, not exactly Scott. True, GM did purchase many of the electrically operated tolleys and rail services in many american cities, starting this buying process in earnest during the immediate post-war years. However, many if not most of these rail lines were beginning a long and torturous decline into red ink, because many of their riders were now beginning to move to the suburbs where rail lines did not exist. And thus, it became more convenient for these commuters to buy an automobile for their transportation needs.
But yes, after buying up these electric rail right-of-ways, GM didn't exactly go out of their way to upgrade or update this service, and found it more profitable all the way around by replacing those systems with their buses.

I'd love to jump in here with some stuff, but I think it would be pointless. But I will say this much, and not a penny more. Any serious study of the labar movement and corporate business practices during the 19th century would support the efforts of the labor unions, even with their attendant evils. I personally think that GM could think their way out of this minor blip by hiring a couple hundred more vice presidents.

Unions are the domains of losers. Period. Building cars ain't working in a coal mine in the 19th century. The UAW helped destroy US automakers with ridiculous demands over the years. And the union leadership lines their pockets.
I work in a white-collar joint where union membership is optional. The union survives with fear tactics and serves to protect the incompetent & lazy. There's only a small window every year that you can withdraw from the union and good luck trying to reach them those days. Bastages!
Are the Toyota, Honda and Hyundai plants in the USA unionized?

And I forgot to say that I'd like to put my two cents in this Union thing here, but MY Union has put me on probation because they felt that I was showin' up everybody else by workin' much too hard to find the absurdist joke in everything!!!
(AND they said I was ALSO p*ssin' off The Management TOO)

Okay! And now BACK to GM's woes here.....
I tend to agree with Greybeard's assessment on this. Once the so-called "Car Guys" turned the operation over to the "Bean Counters" around the early 1970s, in order to pacify the shareholders concerns about their SHORT TERM quarterly profits, often going the diversification route instead of reinvesting in their core product(a very "american" business mindset, ya know), it's been a steady downhill plummet towards mediocracy.
(at least, that's MY, and I think GB's, take on this whole debacle anyway)

Ya know Jackson, while I mostly agree with you here, AND while I know that last line o' yours was not directed towards me personally, I sure wish people would STOP bandying around the term "elitist" in this friggin' undereducated country!!!
Because, the term "elitist" does NOT ONLY mean someone who thinks they are superior in their intellectual abilities or some other pursuits, but ALSO MEANS that because they feel this way they deserve some special social priviledges or some favored status in the world.(at least according to my "American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language", anyway)
And I haven't as of yet seen anybody in this thread propose that any class of people here "deserve any preferential treatment" in any manner whatsoever. Though, I have seen a whole lot o' people(myself included)say in essence, "It's that other guy's fault!", here.
And sooooo, I invite you to be among the vanguard of Americans who will start using this word(and MAYBE a "few" of the other words in our glorious language) correctly.
(now I hope that didn't "hurt too badly" there, because the above was NOT MEANT FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, ya know!!!)
