SO I made this a few weeks ago and wasnt going to post it but after I painted it it looked so much better I figured why not. Its made of aluminum stock from Home Depot...cost about $15 - $20 with some peices left over. Its held together by aluminum rivets. Its purpose built and not intended to be pretty, just decent. I wanted something to strap a decent sized bag to but didnt like the look of a sissy bar and gunfighter seat. 16" total length, 11.5" width and tall enough to clear the back of the gunfighter. The legs are slotted to fit over the bolts between the hard bag mounts for easy on off. AND now...the Super Pillion seat...I need to take my seat in to get reworked and set my solo seat on the rack...made me think and well...I cant sleep so here it goes...

Simple, cheap, works. And who cares about the cosmetics, ya can't see it anyway with the gear strapped on. One addition I would make is that I would have some holes drilled down the sides to make the bungee cords a little more stable.

One mod I would add is to cover up the front of those right angle horizontal pieces. If, heaven forbid, you get rear-ended, they would be heading straight for your kidneys. Ace Hardware carries some rubber plugs in various sizes up to 3" in diameter. They look like the cork plugs in an old wooden keg. Don't mean to be Mr Gloom, just my two cents.

Im with you there. Thats why the ends were rounded and the edges filed down to a nice blunt edge. That corner still looks sharp tho! I need to find those plastic covers that are used on bed frames to cover the ends pointing at me.

Tru-dat - The angle ends are killers. Box in the end with another angle and bolt a backrest to it - comfort and safety. Actually, I'd box both ends and stick a little decorative something or other on the back - maybe a light or two (And if safety is a concern - maybe one of those flashing strobes. And, maybe lose those rivits and get some bolts and lock washers. There's a bunch of potential for utility there. I can see all kinds of luggage space there - Maybe a hard box to go with those bags.

My humble opinion is that the pillion loos VERY high. Your rider must have very tall legs to reach the pegs unless you moved them. You might try and lower the front of the seat. Looks like potential for a lot of pressure on the hoohoo dilly. Pillions lean forward more than riders. Just my 4.5 cents. Take it or leave it. I am jealous of your skill to make things.

You just might be able to find a hard trunk bag to match your side bags? Very nice job on that bracket!

I looked at that once...its too wide. I wouldnt be able to open the bags...LOL I wish the tsukayu bags opened to the side like the HD or Rocket bags do. Makes more sense but cest la vie!
WAIT...unless I hinged the trunk so it flipped forward enough to clear the bags when they opened. Hmmmmmmm

Looks good...I'd like to see a shot from the side of the entire bike from a distance to see how everything is proportioned.

looks good...but I have a few observations...if you care for them...
1 you used 1-1/2" x 1/8" alum. flat stock for your 4 uprights, these ride fairly high with no load...with not too much weight these are going to flex from side to side as you lean the bike putting a heap of stress on a single alum rivet (1/8" by the looks of them) fatigue will have its way and then your load will shift in a violent fashion... as was mentioned by pipedr bolts with lock washers would be better...
2. provide even the slightest bit of diagonal bracing from your 'legs' to the opposite side of the rack (side to side not front to rear) this will greatly reduce your gears want to lean more than you...(it will also increase the amount of weight you can put on top...
3. As has stated already cover those ends (even the rubber caps wont be enought to protect your backside if get rearended (which I sure will not happen...but better safe...)) the closeing off and back rest were a great idea...
I think you've got a great idea there and I like the "utilitatian" approach I often have my bike set up for solo and if I want any more baggage space I have to dig out the rack and screw around with it...I like the simple straight forward approach...nice job

I actually used single peices bent in a "U" shape to keep stability. Side to side movement was one of my concerns. (Ill post an underside pic when I get home next week). I then added the right angle peices (mounted front to back)to prevent the forward back movement which is also helped by the additional support peices as well as by bolting the rack between the bag mounts. Its actually very sturdy and has no movement unless I use all my strength...then the bike moves .

I agree...the more I look at it the more nervous that makes me. I am going to move those peices back to provide enough support for my bag then cut off the rest as far back as I can.

the "U" shape is better! Still loose the rivets and go with a small button head bolt...
Oh yeah and permission to copy it! The more I look at it the more I like it...
simple effective and easy on easy off...
straped properly no need to even remove the bag from the rack to take it in with you! Again nice job

Changes have been made...I feel much better about this version. I still used rivets. I know a bunch of people say use bolts but rivets are what I have for now. If I really like it Ill look into having it welded then powder coated. See for yourself... Under side: A different view so you can see the bends for the main supports. This has always been like this but I never took a pic of it. On the bike now:

Resurrecting this thread because I'm probably going to duplicate/modify this idea. What did you use to fast the rack to the saddlebag posts? I remember seeing you take the rack off in Nelson last July but I didn't pay attention.

It just sandwiches between the spacer and the bag bracket. You can see the slots in the lower portion of the legs in the first picture.

You don't use anything to hold it down? Or just the gear and bungee cords?

I loosen the bolts to the hard bags, I slide the rack between the hard bag bracket and the spacer then tighten bolts again. No problem.
I did add a couple mounting points for my luggage in the form of D rings attatched to the top portion of the rack.

That rack really works with the bike. Is it my imagination, or did you shorten the signal stalks?

Thank you....yes, I shortened them last year....it was part of my Hard Bag install thread...I think
Now they have been replaced and moved to the side of the fender between the bags and fender.
