2006 TBA w/TOR pipes and new K&N filter. Just got it back from the shop where they increased the main jets and dyno'd it. Bike is much stronger when I want power but it still has that barely perceptible (but annoying) lean surge at cruise with the throttle barely open, i.e. steady 50mph in 5th gear or 40mph in 4th.
Which is more effective? R&R the pilot jets or turn out the pilot screws? I don't have any suitable tools or the place to work on it (or the courage to mess with it) so I need to be able to talk with the mechanic about what I want.

easiest and cheapest is to adjust the mixture screws(pilot screws). do the pilot jets when the mixture screws cant give you the effect you are looking for.
does your bike backfire when decelerating? a typical effect of a lean idle mix.

Hi JIm, If you don't want to start tweaking yet, the mechanic should know what you are talking about and also, it should show on the dyno where she's lean. For us to help you though, why not scan your dyno results so we can look at the results printout to determine where she is lean and hopefully what needs to be done. Also I'll be able to put your numbers into our dyno table this onewhich will also help others like yourself see what different setups and settings members they have and their corresponding numbers are. BTW, if you don't want to send your results, can you do me a favour and just tell me what main jets the mechs put in. You see whilst I'm thinking they will be about 145's, I would like that varified by your dyno cos I had a similar setup prior to putting SS pipes on but now I'm considering exchanging them back for the tors again. I'd like to scan up a dyno printout but, the dealer's dyno printer doesn't work and they just use the computer screen to do their work. There's only one Triumph dealer around (House of Power in Melbourne, Florida) and I'm getting less satisfied with their service department every time I use it.
Anybody in central Florida know of a GOOD Triumph shop?

No worries on the dyno part Jim, but you didn't answer my query when I asked what main jets your mechanic decided were the best size for your setup

omg. I feel so bad for you. The House of Power has the worst service department in the world. If you get so frustrated with your sickle that you feel like squeezing off a 45 into it, you would be well advised to do so before you ever think of returning to the HOP. Both Cycle Riders shops are another big no-no. Unfortunately, the man you could have seen to service your ride has been taken away from us by Newnan. Paul Runion. He had Adventure Motorcycle Company off of New York Avenue in Melbourne. If you are serious about having someone who gives a dern about trumpets, I would recommend Joe's Garage. Jeff Ruthishauser, joes_garage@yahoo.com. Look his number up in the phone book. Jeff will do you right. He is one of the very few guys that fixes the House of Power's screw-ups. Paul Runion was another, and a guy named Geoff who works for Southern V-Twin, 1550 Cypress Ave, Melbourne, FL 32935, (321) 255-1600. Geoff might not want to but you should give him a ring just for the heck of it. Great guys both Geoff and Jeff. Top notch. Here's Geoff. Here's Jeff (on the left) Hope this helps. Aside: Rode to the House of Power yesterday. The House of Power did not have any Triumph gloves. They had eighteen folks wandering around ready to sell you something. Terrible place. Just terrible. kaczynski should have mailed one his packages there...

The trick is to adjust your idle screws for best idle speed. If they are over 3 to 3 1/4 turns out, you need bigger pilot jets.

WOW! Thanx for the info! I was almost thinking of selling my TBA if I couldn't get dependable service. I'll certainly give Jeff a buzz and tell him my situation.

Can you give me Joe's business address and phone number? I couldn't find Joe's Garage in the phone book. Sent him an e-mail but never got a reply.

Me Too. I was referring to Cycle Riders in Orlando and Longwood. Where it me I would ask if these Cocoa Beach boys are related to either of the above. If yes then stay away. Very far away. Where are you located? Beer and wrenching go together quite well. Just ask Pat, Matt, Mark...Or is it the other way around? Like ask Matt to get a twelve pack and you get an eleven pack. Or beer and wrenching don't go together they compliment each other?

PM sent Edited: But you aren't allowing PM's. So look in the phone book for Jeff not his garage. He wrenches in his museum. And work finds him out of town a lot. Call his home phone and leave a message for Jeff with Anne.

Come to think of it, I tried a while back to find these guys in Cocoa Beach. Google says they are around the ABSleeze. They say they are behind the 7 Eleven. I gave up. They aren't listed in the phone book. Anywho won't return info for their phone number, the Div of Corps list the Name 'Cycle Riders USA' as fictitious. Gazing down from a satellite shows no sickles parked anywhere around the sleaze or the 7 Eleven. So who knows? Maybe when you call them and find out for real where they are you could fill me in? Strange indeed.

I've been there and talked to the dude.
But the repair shop is in Cape Canaveral and they take your bike from the CB loc to CC by trailer...something about zoning in CB.
All they have in the store is mostly clothes helmets and a few chrome bits, oil etc. of course they can order you anything.
They are by the ace hardware just before a1a splits by the old glass bank(Atlantic Nautilus). in the strip mall on the south end. You should scope them out and see what you think.
Thanks, E

With their address in hand I rode by their shop this morning on my way to work. Nice hole in the wall. Will be riding by at lunch to talk em up I guess. There is no way you can notice the place from the highway while in motion. I wonder if they had that place back when Brassy's was the Disco biscuit? And Krystals was doling out grease to the drunken hoards. I would have to be one of those hoards to let a stranger take my sickle off site to work on it. Nothing like letting a place that doesn't list their phone number well never mind...

Didn't know about the PM feature. It's open now. I spoke with Jeff and apparently he's not fixing bikes right now. He told me he knew somebody who could give my bike that last bit of tuning it needs and passed on my info. I hope all goes well so I'll never have to go to House Of Power again.

No response from the dude that Jeff referred me to. Anybody else in central Florida that I can retain as a trustworthy Triumph mechanic?
ALL I NEED is for somebody to remove the pilot jet caps and turn them out a few turns. Are the Keihin carbs found on rice rockets? If so, I'll just take my bike to an independent who works on such bikes and let him tweak the carbs. Beyond that, I guess I can go on using House of Power for the most basic routine maintenance...

Keihin is a division of Honda. Any self respecting indy HD or Gixxer wrench will know the drill.

Well, If you don't mind driving to Orlando. Ridenow Orlando(formerly cycle riders Orlando)has a real good Triumph mechanic named Coy. Problem is otown traffic and the new guys that work in the service center don't seem to have half a clue. Every time I've had Coy work on my bike it seems like it's better than ever.
But because of the traffic and the new dingbats in the service center and store I'll not be going back.
Moe was going to check out the Cocoa Beach cycle riders and see whats up with them.?

if coy is the Vietnamese guy, he was the dude that left one of my camshaft backlash gears un-tensioned and 5 of 8 valves out of clearance specs.

Yeah thats the guy. Hope it was really him that did it and he's not getting the blame for some others mistakes, how long ago was this that he left all that stuff messed up?
He's never messed my bike up. Even changed the cases when the starter gear races broke back in Dec. and did a valve job. Bike runs faster and better than ever.
Oh well. I'm not going back there anymore anyway.
Thanks for the info moe.

9/25/2002 Got charged $413.80. This was when the DC snipers were nesting in trunks. Cycle Riders, after I called them, said the valves will quiet down with wear as the silica in Florida air will mineralize on the valve seats and tighten things up. Brilliant. I feel a rant coming on so I'll say this, "Happy Wednesday and good riding"

In all fairness to Coy
Got to thinking about Coy. He is a decent guy and from what I have heard over the years, Coy knows trumpets and is an excellent mechanic. Coy sorted out a non-correctable problem that Con's couldn't after two attempts. I did get to talk to Coy at length about that. Regarding the valve adjustment job, I believe he didn't work on mine even though the service manager said he did. However, that does not excuse him for not verifying the work before the cam cover went back on. A percursory glance by Coy would have shown him the un-tensioned Intake backlash gear.
The stealership calls the shots for the mechanics. They don't pay the mechanics enough. The mechanic(s) they do compensate justly are stretched so thin that they can't possibly work on all the motorsickles. These good mechanics have to dole out the work to inexperienced underlings who are in the position more for a job than the love.
Supporting local dealers is a dynamic thing. However, too many local dealers lack the skilled mechanics/properly compensated mechanics to make the means of our supporting them happen, i.e., motorsickle repair and service.

Thanks for the offer! Can't make it Wednesday or Thursday. Can you do it Friday or Saturday? I used to do a lot of lectric work years ago. If it's pertaining to a car, I'd rather have the schematics and a VOM before getting too deep into things. Most things are unrepairable nowadays, tho.

I have never worked with this particular guy, but I hear Andy at Arlen Ness at Destination Daytona is excellent. He works exclusively on Trumps and Ducs. I did get the chance to meet him, and he is a good guy. His wrenching reputation comes second hand.
