For those who haven't read this, I highly recommend it. I did mine this way and have no regrets. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

Funny thing about all this is that I have never been easy on any motor during break in. I just dont think it is possible to be that nice to a motor for the recommended time frame. I had my rocket 3, road it for a week and put about 150 miles on it stoplight to stoplight hitting the rev limiter several times. then after that 150 miles, road it on a 400 mile trip. Hitting the 140 mark for about 5 miles straight. ( yes there are wide open roads like that around here!!! ) Well, when I had the oil changed, and a k and n filter, cat eliminator, pipes installed and mapped, dyno tuned. My rocket was the best on the dyno in town. ( both hp and torque ) I broke in my speed triple the same way and it also was the best on the dyno. Mark

It doesn't seem to be a very scientific treatise:
"If the rings aren't forced against the walls soon enough, they'll use up the roughness before they fully seat."
Sorry, I think it's BS. Engines built loose also do well on the dyno, but they don't last very long.

Since reliability is a big thing these days, if that worked bike manufacturers would be all over it like flies on poop.

Not so from my perspective. It requires a different kind of discipline and devotion to break in an engine the mototune way, & the average consumer simply can't or won't do that.
How do top race teams break in an engine to ensure max performance? It's not done by the owner's manual.

after the big bore i rode it easy for about 500 miles. i revved it pretty good but i did not beat it. after break in i run amsoil and beat the ****** out of it, blows no smoke, and runs like a top. i am willing to pass up a bit of power for reliability. but then again maybe beating it from the get go is just as good.

I did it on my speedy the mototune way, and service guy said whenever he tested that he havent experience pull up like my speedy, with just basic upgrades...
I am sold on this, and I am looking for my warranty to expire that I may to some work on velocity holes (I believe that what do you call)...
something, new something different...

Go ahead and find you a head and have it ready to install when the warranty runs out.
