The only thing more ridiculous, then when I got pulled over for excessivly loud pipes (tors) last year. Was the ticket my wife got last night for "accelertion" (the actual ticket was 49 in a 35). A grumpy old cop who said that he, heard her accelerate "at a very high rate" so he pulled her over. Now what is ripping her up, is there was a pack of sport bikes that took off quite fast, then a prius, then her. And she got pulled over and ticketed for 137 bucks. Plus anyone who has ridden a savage knows its not a speed machine off the line.

Cop might have thought he'd never catch the sport bikes and had to stop somone.
Are they grumpy all the time,or just around bike week?

Note that cops only ticket those they think they can catch. That is probably why the Prius got away too.
I wonder how the judge would take it if she explained that her only choices were to sit and hold up traffic or accelerate.

I have 2 ticket lawyers on Speedial. They both charge about $65-70 per ticket. Mostly it gets dismissed, even if I have to eventually pay court costs there are no points. Lawyers... it's what they're good for.

OMG! Are they licensed to practice in California? I have a speeding ticket pending there and the cheapest lawyer I can find wants $500 to handle the case. And he's only promising to get it reduced. The ticket itself is $380.

The engineer in me has to ask... What does acceleration have to do with the speed she was going? I can accelerate like a mo-fo up to 30 MPH, but I'm still not speeding...

And Ben the engineer in her was arguing with the same point with the cop. Not sure if she pulled out the "My husband said he souped it up, so I'm sure I was going even slower than you thought sir."

Well here's what I don't understand then... What the heck constitutes an "Unsafe Start", or "Exhibition Driving/Riding", short of wheelie-ing off a standing start? Because, as Benny's question above implies, short of also cutting another driver/rider off as you would accelerate from this standing start, how exactly is this manuever supposedly "dangerous"??? I ask this because, as most of you folks know, California allows for splitting lanes(or "filtering" to some) to arrive between the cars stopped at red-lighted intersections. And once the light changes to green, and of course after you MAKE SURE that no cross-traffic is running their red light, you GOOOOOOOOOO, and this manuever affords you a whole lot of clearance from all the dunderheaded cagers that would have been around you. You see, they're waaaaaaay back there BEHIND you now! Now, with the proviso that I haven't exceeded the posted speed limit(and as I said above, do NOT "wheelie" in the process), I can't tell you how many times I've performed this manuver in the presence of a Traffic/Patrol Officer, and have never been "hasseled by The Man" here in the "Golden State"!!! And so I ask, what the heck was runnin' through the mind of that cop in NH anyway??? Because, I can't believe a...thump..thump..thump..Suzuki SAVAGE could conceivable even begin to ever perform a quote: "Unsafe Start" to begin with???!!! (no offense there Dill, OR to your lovely wife's little Suzook either!!!)
Yep! Just like a good Single Malt Scotch, you might call me "an acquired taste" TOO.(among the many OTHER things you may care to call me, of course)

I joined the Mrs. Dill's 1%ers & lawless outlaws club on Saturday, and got pinched for (gasp!) not wearing a seat belt in my pickup. I usually wear one, but was on a one mile short trip. I was wondering if it's a punishment for the officers to have that duty, standing along the road eyeballing seat belts. I would have to think they'd much rather be doing something else. The fine is $37, but I plead not guilty regardless of the charge. Maybe I'll request a jury trial.

Dunno what I'm going to do when I get my '51 Plymouth on the road, it doesn't have any provision for mounting seatbelts. And, my '69 D100 only has lap belts that you can't see from the outside.

back in the day when this state had motor vehicle safty inspection, seat belts where only required if they where original equipment on the car. Think our "buckle up" law rads kinda the same way.
And from what I hear about New Mexico, you dont need seat belts, doors, fenders, or windsheild anyway.

Well, back in my Y & A days growing up in Nebraska we had stint where the cops were writing youngens up for "Show of Power"! Simply making noise while starting out would get you one of those. If I remember right the ticket was something like $35.

GB, an ex post facto law is forbidden in the US Constitution. What that means is a law cannot make something illegal after the fact. Your '51 must comply with the laws in effect at the time of it's construction.

Well it looks like she will get off on a technicality. The officer wrote the wrong plate number down, he swapped the plates out with the other guy who was pulled over. Going to court in a couple of weeks.

Well Dill, speaking of ridiculous tickets. I just got one for $93 for failure to carry an insurance ID card. I decided to ride the bike to work to save on gas and come over the crest of a hiil not more that two miles from my house and there is a cop sitting there with his radar gun and he pulls me over. OK, I really wasn't going that fast, so he asks me for my license, registration and Insurance ID card. OK, got a licence, have registration, and an expired insurance card. Hand the stuff to him. He comes back and tells me he isn't going to give me a speeding ticked just an infraction for not having the insurance ID card. What could I really say - nothing. I get to work and look at it and its $93. Really glad I saved on that gas money and took the bike to work today. I'm honestly at the point where I think we are spending too many of our tax dollars on law enforcement so that regular citizens can be cited for ridiculous infractions like seatbelts, insurance cards, etc.

I had to pay a 100 fine for having an uninsured vehilce. Thing was broken sitting on blocks at my Moms house. had been there for six months.I knew it was destined for the junk yard. So I let the insurance lapse, but did not cancel the registration.I got a letter form DMV telling they were notified by my insurance company that I had not renewed insurance and i could either send them 100 or take it to court.
took it to court went somthing like this. Judge: "Was the vehicle registered?" Me "Yes Sir" Judge:"Did you cancel the insurance?" Me "yes Sir". Judge: "Pay the the clerk on the way out,Next case please."

One nice thing about NH is no mandatory auto insurance. Yes it has its downsides, but we don't have to worry about crap like that.

The irony in my case is that they are citing me for failure to carry a card, the bike has been insured since the day I bought it and the insurance has never lapsed. I might appeal my ticket since when I went and read the statute it says "The certificate of registration and any automobile insurance card for the vehicle issued pursuant to section 38a-364 shall be carried in the motor vehicle at all times when it is being operated on a public highway". Notice it says "any automobile insurance card". Well, I had one, just not the most current one. Not sure, if that will prevail in court, but might be worth a try. I'm not against the fact that people should be insured, just when they nail you on not having the current card on hand, it just burns you.

Gilligan;
I think if you walk into court and can prove you had valid insurance at the time. They'll throw it out. Cop was just being an overzealous prig. My case was different granted the vehilce had not been driven uninsured but I was still in violation of the "letter of the law".

Once I was pulled over, my insurance card was not current, the new ones had not arrived yet, so the cop asked me if I was still insured, I said yes sir, he let me go... I was stunned! Then another time some teenager crashed my car... luckily a cop saw the whole thing happen... he did ask me for the insurance, ID etc... turns out I left my wallet at the office, not good, but the cop was very understanding and said "don't worry about it, I can pull all that info from my computer in the cruiser" and he did... he was more concerned with the teenager driving by herself when she should of have adult supervision. gilligan, I think you might be able to dispute that one... say that the mail sometimes work too slow you had a card and the cop could have checked weather or not you were insured.

Yeah, I might try to appeal it and then it will depend on what kind of judge I get. I guess the thing that annoys me the most is that I really don't even ride that fast anymore (51 in a 35) its like they are just looking to generate money for the state. But I suppose if the cop wanted to be a real ****** he could have cited me for speeding too. I gotta let this go and get on with life. Thanks for letting me vent. It's always good to be able to share the pain.

Here you have to sign your registration saying you have Ins. and if you get it in the mail and dont sign you will get a ticket.I belive they are after the $$$ not any thing else. Or they pile on the offenses so at least one sticks. You go to court and they will tell you we will lower it to this fine is half cop does not have to show. Saves them money so yours goes futher.

Yep appeal it, if he doesn't have a radar read out that he can prove is her or follow her for a mile then there is no grounds for the ticket. At least that's how it works in PA. Just hearing her take off doesn't indicate speed just RPM. Maybe she was still in first and only going 20 at 6,000 RPM or what ever the ratio would be on that bike. If you fight any speeding ticket where there is more than just you on the road any fair judge should find you not guilty since it is really impossible to prove who was clocked with a radar. Here if you plead not guilty the cop will pull you aside before the hearing and cut a deal for your guilty plea. Lower the speed and drop points, always.
