We have an '05 Cooper, not Cooper S. We get about 36 mpg on the highway (typically 75 mph) and average about 30 when driving around town. They are great cars and surprisingly comfortable on long trips.

I have a 2007 Mini Cooper S. I tend to have a lead foot and I get a little over 30 MPG. But then it is more sports car than coupe. If I work at it I can get close to 40MPG but where's the fun in that? Go to the Mini owners website for a lot more information. http://www.northamericanmotoring.com/

I ordered mine in mid July of last year and got it right after labor day. Some people have waited months and others mere weeks. Some dealers have lots of cars in stock too so you may find what you want with no wait. You don't save much by getting a used one since the resale is very good. You may as well buy new and get the entire warranty.

Somehow I just can't picture my 150 lb. half Saint/half Pyrenees riding partner in a GTI, that's what makes the Clubman so appealing.

Z,
I looked at them long and hard a few months back. I was just a hair away from making the move when I took one last test ride and changed my mind - Partially due to my wife's distain for the little beauties and partially due to discovering that I work for a company that has a 'partnership' program of some kind with FOMOCO. I ended up with a Mazda 3 instead. I'm pleased with it, but had it not been for the other reasons, I'd have a Mini.
After testing several variants, my choice was the std. Mini with the sport package. I decided the turbo didn't give me any benefit at all unless I had my foot stuck to the floorboard and it only ate more gas. I was primarilly looking for handling as opposed to shear neck snapping power - which in my opinion was less than I'd expected from the turbo. I am also of the opinion that the space gained in the clubman is not worth the price or what it does to the 'looks' of the Mini.
Be sure to take a ride - or several rides (They're real good about that) to determine what it is you want. You might want to swing around the house and see what you can stick inside the thing, too. Depending on your personal preferences and needs, you may either be impressed or disappointed. There's plenty of driver room and comfort - but things get a bit 'iffy' behind the driver's seat.
I still think they're great, but like all small cars, there are limitations to their utility factor. If fun is more important than utility - It's got to be high on the list.
I had compared them to a motorcycle with windows or a go-cart with a radio.

Another mini house here.... wife's car actually. She does a 70 mile round trip commute everyday and depending on traffic she's anywhere between 32 and 40 mpg. Great little fun car, basically a go-kart you can go to the grocery store in. Not the turbo version but it is a stick and after having drove it I would see no reason to throw the extra coin down for a turbo unless you like/need/want some of the other goodies that come with that package.
About my only complaint I would have with the vehicle is that if ya got big hoofs having all three of those pedals in that close a proximity is a bit of a problem. She did have some service work done on it that required a loaner. Brought home an automatic, paddle shifters on the wheel even and to me was way more enjoyable a ride. I don't think an automatic took one thing away from it in the performance factor other than you might lose a slight bit on the overall mpg.

ditto3 except I'm not in the market for a car... I've always been a big VW fan and one thing I like is you can get a GTI with FOUR doors 5 really... I also read they are going to come out with a new Rabbit next year that actually looks more like the last one. I don't like the new front end on them much, especially on the jetta. Too much like a Toyota Corolla.

They should be good for low speed in town driving but I remember the Top Gear test where it had the stability of a shopping cart in turns. On the other hand....

Wouldn't put to much stock in what the Top Gear presenters have to say about cars. Cars with 500hp or more are concidered great cars, anything with less than that is sneered at.
When The Hamster test drove the Nissan Mirca he parked it on the side of the road in the hope that someone would steel it.
PS, love Top Gear, i recored every episode. It is the by far the funnist car show on tv. This sunday on BBC America they are having a Top Gear marathon, which includes the road trip accross Florida, Alabama and Louisana, very funny episode where they nearly got killed by some alabamans, and also they will be showing the road trip across Africa. Both episodes are well worth watching.

Sonya has another beamer ( non mini ) that is really fun but dont try to haul anything in it unless its but. She has a little black z3 with the 1.9 that gets up to 28 in town and 33 on the highway. Mark

A friend of mine in Kansas had me take some pics of a Mini here in Dallas a lady was selling... easier than a trade in on the special order new Mini she was getting.. Way cool car, said she got about 29 mph around town (DFW Metro****) over 35+ on frequent trips to Houston. She took me for a test ride, stick, not the S, good acceleration, cornering... she drove it like a sports car. Um.... she actually drove it like she was on a racetrack... We're running on one of the in town Dallas freeways, I thot she was going around 60. Then she apologized cause she "couldn't open her up"... we were actually doing 82! Mark came down from Ks, and bought it. He's pleased as punch about it. Told me to take it for a test drive, but only if I was in the market for a new car. <G> Mary

I'm a big VW fan, too. Check this out:
http://jalopnik.com/397242/vw-golf-twin-drive-plug+in-hybrid-diesel-makes-prius-look-thirsty
Dude that's awesome. Just last night my buddy (Prius owner) and I were talking about the plug in kits people are offering for them. Still 10K, but there's a company that is trying to get their technology out there to the big companies. I bet the plug ins will be the next big cheeze in a couple years.
That being said I'd drive a Mini if I could
